I’m doing a new research piece for 2019 – looking at all the salary caps and salary situations team-by-team and seeing if there is going to be any fantasy-impactful cuts coming up…a cut where a good player could wind up cut and goes right into a better fantasy spot, and/or the cut opens up a younger player for an opportunity for Week 1 that doesn’t seem as possible in the summer.

Additionally, I’m looking at the same for possible players to be traded…will it help the player and/or open up an opportunity.

I don’t want to get caught by surprise by moves, nor do I want to trust any ESPN, etc., type article on a similar topic – because what the hell do they know about any of these talents anyway? I’ll do my own research and pass it on for us to consider.

We’ll go through division-by-division and just see what might be happening in the months ahead and players to watch out for who are most impacted.

Arizona:

Most impactful player who could be released: SAF D.J. Swearinger

Not a big deal for fantasy. He makes $4.5M this season or gets cut for no salary cap hit. He just makes sense to dump, or they re-do his deal cheaper.

Possibly traded: DT Robert Nkemdiche

I didn’t understand the love for this guy when he was a 1st-round draft pick. He’s the Bruce Arians vision of the future for Tampa – bad draft pick players that are head cases that Arians can be a ‘Daddy’ to. See: Tyrann Mathieu, and coming soon…Devin White.

I could see Nkemdiche just dumped outright but I bet Arizona could get a conditional 7th or something.

*If this season gets out of hand early for the Cardinals…watch out for a big Patrick Peterson trade coming at the trade deadline.

Young player potentially cut to watch where he lands: WR Chad Williams

Another Bruce Arians Father Flanagan reclamation project…taken way ahead of where anyone projected his NFL Draft year. Actually, Williams is talented…but troubled. He doesn’t fit what Arizona is doing but I bet he gets cut and picked up by Tampa Bay by Week 1 kickoff.

Landing in TB keeps him alive, but not sure the Bucs are going to offer him any opportunity to get on the field any time soon.

Fantasy action items here: Not much. We’ll be keeping an eye on Williams, but he’s becoming a long shot to ever FF-matter…and if he started to matter, he’d probably mess up doing something stupid off the field to blow it. If Arizona keeps Williams, that will be shocking (good)…and it means Kingsbury/Kyler see something.

L.A. Rams:

Most impactful player who could be released: DL Michael Brockers

Michael Brockers could go…$12M due this year (he’s already booked $2M+ roster bonus), or $2M to release. I’m thinking he will re-do his deal to stay with the Rams…or the Rams just let him ride this final year to make the big run at the Super Bowl again.

Possibly traded: CB Marcus Peters

One of the most overrated corners in football, but the establishment thinks he’s great because he had a bunch of picks as a rookie, years ago. There might be a sucker team that would take him. He’s set to make $9M guaranteed this year and become a free agent after. The Rams may bit the bullet and see if Peters cleans up his act prior to his pending free agency.

Likely, Peters stays and plays out his final year…especially if Aqib Talib isn’t deemed ready for 2019.

Young player potentially cut to watch where he lands: TE Keenen Brown

The Texas State UDFA rookie has some Jordan Reed in him. He’s potentially better than Gerald Everett, but the Rams are committed to Everett right now. They’ll likely try to stuff Brown on the practice squad as Everett insurance or takeover in 2020.

Watch if he gets cut and grabbed by a team in TE need…or if the Rams roster him – then start the ‘McVay’s new Jordan Reed’ talk among us

Fantasy action items here: Watch the Keenen Brown final spot for Week 1…Rams main roster, grabbed by another team, or put on Rams P-Squad. This will let us know what the Rams think of him – it would be a huge statement if he makes the roster.

San Francisco:

Most impactful player who could be released: WR Jordan Matthews

The 49ers have way too many WRs to keep Matthews. If they did keep Matthews, I’d be impressed…and then I’d want to know what young guys got dumped instead

Also, one to watch Richard Sherman…$10M due, $2M paid if cut. The 49ers need him, though -- because if SF doesn’t win this year, the heat is going to be cranked up on the 49ers’ management team for 2020.

Possibly traded: PK Robbie Gould

He’s going to force the team to trade him to Chicago for anything they can get (he wants to go to Chicago for family reasons)…they are just trying to pretend they’re not entertaining a deal, to keep the price up, which smart on their behalf.

The 49ers should work a three-way deal sending Gould to the Bears and then using what they get from CHI to make a deal with the Ravens to get Kaare Vedrick.

Young player potentially cut to watch where he lands: WR Richie James

His biggest crime might be that the 49ers, somewhat inexplicably, have a log jam created at WR on their roster. James could be a slot starter for a few NFL teams in need right away…and yet he can’t make the 49ers roster.

The other option would be WR Kendrick Bourne – he’s terrific. A professional WR who could be cut or traded…and if he lands with a great QB, and the team is need because a top WR got hurt in the preseason – he might show out. He should already be starting for an NFL team…and for the 49ers, but he may not even make the team.

Fantasy action items here: We need to very much watch this WR situation because 1-2-3 very talented WRs are going to get dropped and picked up to play elsewhere. The 49ers cannot keep 7-8 WRs, can they?

Seattle:

Most impactful player to be released: RB C.J. Prosise

Not that Seattle wants to or really has to dump him, but they just do not need Prosise…and CJP has been hurt/out for most all his Seattle career. Saves just $700K+ to cut, but it’s more a non-need and his contract is over after this season anyway. Might as well move on now.

I think CJP has something to offer the NFL as a passing game back…if he could ever stay healthy.

Possibly traded: RB C.J. Prosise

Double duty on the lists here. If CJP plays well in the preseason and seems healthy…and if some NFL team takes a shocking injury to their passing game RB – Seattle could get a late-round conditional pick for CJP vs. just cutting him.

Watch Chicago as a landing spot if one of their RBs get hurt in mid/late August. I’ll explain why if it happens.

Young player potentially cut to watch where he lands: WR John Ursua

The 7th-round pick out of Hawaii…he deserves better than Seattle. He’d be great in an up-tempo passing game like Arizona, Cleveland, etc. Seattle will start Lockett-Moore-Metcalf with Jaron Brown #4 and Gary Jennings #5. Ursua is a great candidate for Seattle to cut and try to stash on the Practice Squad. Watch if some team intervenes, as they should.

Fantasy action items here: Prosise’s next team is of some PPR interest, if he’s healthy. He could be a semi-shock RB3 in PPR if everything falls right. Dynasty watch on Ursua upgrading from Seattle, possibly.
