2021 Dynasty/Fantasy Preseason Wk1 Game Analysis: Patriots 22, Washington 13 (Subscriber Extra)

*See the usual game recap/notes/commentary on the FFM homepage. This next part is for subscribers, some deeper thoughts and sneaky sleepers I want you to know first before the general pop…

Just one thing to kick around after this game watch/study…

Who the hell is Kristian Wilkinson, and why were Mac Jones and Brian Hoyer treating him like he was the Pats #1 WR? 6 catches, 39 yards, on 9 targets…far and away leading all receivers in targets for the game.

When I asked – who the hell is Kristian Wilkinson? It wasn’t me acting like you didn’t know…I didn’t know. I don’t recall anything about him. Then I watched him be a go-to here, and then I looked up his data and I’m like…I gotta dig deeper into this. I thought I remembered him, but I wasn’t sure.

So, this Subscriber Extra is all about me/us learning about Kristian Wilkinson…flash in the pan preseason guy or something more?

First things first, check this out:

2020 UDFA out of SE Missouri

Pro Day results:

6’1.1” /200, 9.75” hands, 31.8” arms

4.50 40-time, 1.45 10-yard (which is stellar, if real)

4.09 shuttle, 6.68 three-cone (wow)

12 bench reps, 39.5” vertical, 10’8” broad.

We got an athlete on our hands here.

2019 Season: 71 catches, 1,350 yards, 10 TDs (13 games)

2018: 61 catches, 894 yards, 14 TDs (13 games)

The highlight tape from college is solid/nice. He’s got a good build and is aggressive after the ball, but it’s hard to tell how good he is on tape from the low level of competition.

Wilkinson was a UDFA grab by New England last year, and they stashed him on the practice squad.

Watching him back in this preseason game – very smooth, capable receiver and moved around well. If/when you watch the YouTube video we have with this post, all his catches from this game, you see some nifty moves and solid ability to get open and go make yards. A very impressive debut that was better the 2nd-time around when I watched/focused on just his work. The Patriots have something here.

And considering they have pretty flimsy WRs as it is – Wilkinson should make this roster and work his way up the ladder for Belichick. He’ll be another reason why NE can easily dump N’Keal Harry.

Who would I comp Wilkinson too, at my first glance? His look and mannerisms kinda remind me of a smaller Cordarrelle Patterson…he plays like a WR that has a running back mindset, like Patterson. I’m not saying he’s as explosive as CP -- but he is probably a better technical receiver for sure…like a more athletic Jakobi Meyers.

We could be talking about a better than your average UDFA WR hopeful here. A guy who is in the right place at the right time to grow with Mac Jones. Let’s see what happens with him as this preseason unfolds, but I think there is something legit here for the future – a solid NFL starter who flows with how good the QB play is around him.
