2019 NFL Mock Draft 1st Round (v1.0)

January 26, 2019

In 2015, College Football Metrics joined forces with preeminent draft forecaster Xavier Cromartie to produce mock drafts and top 100 prospect boards for entry into The Huddle Report’s exclusive, experts-only NFL Draft scoring. Xavier starts to post mock drafts and top 100 boards in January and continues up to the draft in April.

Xavier's four-year average score in the The Huddle Report's mock draft scoring is 40.5.

2019 NFL Mock Draft by Xavier Cromartie v1.0

24 January 2019

1. Arizona Cardinals: DT Quinnen Williams (Alabama)

Top needs: DT, OT, CB

The pick: Williams was the most dominant college player of 2018. ARI needs better than Robert Nkemdiche inside.

Other options: Pair DE Nick Bosa with DE Chandler Jones. Replace awful QB Josh Rosen with QB Kyler Murray.

2. San Francisco 49ers: DE Nick Bosa (Ohio State)

Top needs: CB, S, LB

The pick: Bosa is a clear top-2 talent. SF could use a real EDGE presence to upgrade on tweener bust Solomon Thomas.

Other options: DT Quinnen Williams on talent. LB Devin White to lead the defense. CB Byron Murphy out of need.

3. New York Jets: DE Rashan Gary (Michigan)

Top needs: DE, CB, WR

The pick: Gary has huge physical upside and fits the new defense. NYJ has gone too long with no EDGE presence.

Other options: CB Byron Murphy to fill a scheme need. OLB Josh Allen if he can play in the scheme.

4. Oakland Raiders: LB Devin White (Louisiana State)

Top needs: WR, CB, LB

The pick: White is big, tough, physical, smart, a hard worker. Imagine Mike Mayock's saying all those things.

Other options: CB Byron Murphy to fix a terrible secondary. DE Rashan Gary for massive potential.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: CB Byron Murphy (Washington)

Top needs: CB, RB, DE

The pick: Murphy should be the first CB, before Baker and Williams. TB has replacement level DBs.

Other options: DT Christian Wilkins if Gerald McCoy is released. An EDGE to replace JPP.

6. New York Giants: QB Daniel Jones (Duke)

Top needs: QB, DT, OLB

The pick: Jones is an old-school tall QB. It would be difficult to ignore the QB need again.

Other options: QB Dwayne Haskins if no one trades ahead. Another OLB or DL.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: QB Dwayne Haskins (Ohio State)

Top needs: QB, OT, RB

The pick: Haskins is the top QB in the draft. JAX is more desperate and willing to move up than NYG.

Other options: QB Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, or Kyler Murray.

8. Detroit Lions: OLB Josh Allen (Kentucky)

Top needs: DE, LB, TE

The pick: Allen should fit the mixed DET scheme well. He fills the desperate EDGE need.

Other options: DE Clelin Ferrell as a good-sized EDGE. LB Devin White if available.

9. Buffalo Bills: OT Jawaan Taylor (Florida)

Top needs: OT, WR, G

The pick: Taylor would start at RT immediately. BUF needs to fix 4 of its 5 OL spots.

Other options: A boost to the DL. Reaching for another offensive player.

10. Denver Broncos: QB Drew Lock (Missouri)

Top needs: CB, DT, QB

The pick: Lock has the big arm. Case Keenum was always a short-term solution.

Other options: QB Daniel Jones if still available. CB Deandre Baker to fill a major need.

11. Cincinnati Bengals: CB Deandre Baker (Georgia)

Top needs: OT, LB, CB

The pick: Baker would make Dre Kirkpatrick obsolete. CIN has a long history of 1st-round CBs.

Other options: G Jonah Williams or OT Greg Little for OL need. Trade down.

12. Green Bay Packers: OLB Jachai Polite (Florida)

Top needs: OLB, S, WR

The pick: Polite makes Nick Perry expendable. Perry isn't worth $14M.

Other options: Another EDGE rusher. Best talent available.

13. Miami Dolphins: DT Christian Wilkins (Clemson)

Top needs: OT, DT, QB

The pick: Wilkins was the best player on Clemson's championship d-line. Coach Flores may push for a big DT.

Other options: OT Greg Little to pair Ole Miss bookends. A much-needed QB.

14. Atlanta Falcons: DT Ed Oliver (Houston)

Top needs: DT, DE, G

The pick: Oliver has good tape but is underweight. He can join the ATL endless DL rotation.

Other options: DT Jeffery Simmons as a bigger option. DE Clelin Ferrell or Montez Sweat.

15. Washington Redskins: QB Kyler Murray (Oklahoma)

Top needs: QB, WR, S

The pick: WAS needs a complete reboot on offense. Alex Smith may never return.

Other options: Reach for a WR. Trade down for a safety.

16. Carolina Panthers: DE Clelin Ferrell (Clemson)

Top needs: DE, CB, G

The pick: Ferrell would start opposite Mario Addison. CAR has no young EDGE players.

Other options: DE Montez Sweat or Zach Allen. Reach for a CB.

I have been going through the East-West game prospects and beginning work on the first full scouting reports since December 2018, and they’ll be the first things you see out of the gates when we open up.

I’m shocked by a few of the East-West prospects…some potential ‘wow’ prospects in a game there usually isn’t much ‘wow’ in because they all usually wind up at the Senior Bowl. Not this year. The East-West games will have dynasty rookie draft sleeper wheels turning early.

Haskins-Grier-Lock-Minshew-Murray-Stidham…other? What’s up with this oft-labeled weak QB draft class? I’m not sure it’s that weak…depends upon your perspective. We’ll be analyzing and computer grading all the top QBs and discussing what I mean by ‘perspective’.

It’s NFL Draft overload season…it’s Fantasy title defense or title chase study season… Here comes our 8th year of College Football Metrics to the rescue!**

17. Cleveland Browns: DT Jeffery Simmons (Mississippi State)

Top needs: DT, WR, CB

The pick: Simmons would go earlier if there weren't so many DLs. CLE interior needs help.

Other options: Whichever DT is available. A CB to play opposite Denzel Ward.

18. Minnesota Vikings: G Jonah Williams (Alabama)

Top needs: DT, G, LB

The pick: Regardless of which position Williams plays, MIN needs to upgrade 4 of its 5 OL spots.

Other options: A DT if any last to this point. Trade down.

19. Tennessee Titans: OLB Montez Sweat (Mississippi State)

Top needs: OLB, DT, WR

The pick: Sweat has a lanky build that may drop him a little. TEN needs young rushers.

Other options: Whoever is the best available DL or EDGE player.

20. Pittsburgh Steelers: LB Devin Bush (Michigan)

Top needs: LB, CB, OLB

The pick: PIT tends to reach for need and has been weak at LB since Ryan Shazier went out.

Other options: LB Mack Wilson. CB Greedy Williams and move on from Artie Burns.

21. Seattle Seahawks: OT Greg Little (Mississippi)

Top needs: CB, DE, G

The pick: Little would mean the end of Ifedi. The OL has been horrid for years.

Other options: DE Zach Allen if Frank Clark doesn't sign. SEA tends to take CBs later.

22. Baltimore Ravens: RB Josh Jacobs (Alabama)

Top needs: RB, WR, LB

The pick: Jacobs is the top RB. BAL wants to run more than any other team.

Other options: Any WR, since BAL has only Snead.

23. Houston Texans: CB Greedy Williams (Louisiana State)

Top needs: CB, OT, TE

The pick: Williams is overhyped by a full round and wasn't even the best CB on LSU.

Other options: Whoever is the best CB available. Reach for a bad OT.

24. Oakland Raiders (via CHI): WR Marquise Brown (Oklahoma)

Top needs: WR, CB, LB

The pick: Some scouts are high on Brown despite his light weight. OAK has no real WRs.

Other options: OAK needs almost everything on defense.

25. Philadelphia Eagles: DT Dexter Lawrence (Clemson)

Top needs: DT, LB, G

The pick: Lawrence would allow PHI to dump overpriced Timmy Jernigan.

Other options: PHI likes to stockpile DLs and will likely take the best one available.

26. Indianapolis Colts: DE Zach Allen (Boston College)

Top needs: CB, DE, WR

The pick: Allen is a big EDGE presence. He pairs with Jabaal Sheard.

Other options: An outside CB. A WR to take pressure off TY Hilton.

27. Oakland Raiders (via DAL): CB Julian Love (Notre Dame)

Top needs: WR, CB, LB

The pick: Love had an excellent season. OAK needs someone opposite Gareon Conley.

Other options: Anyone who can play defense.

28. Los Angeles Chargers: DT Dre'Mont Jones (Ohio State)

Top needs: LB, DT, OT

The pick: Jones would replace Corey Liuget. LAC is weak in the middle.

Other options: LAC had no LBs in the playoffs. RT is the weak spot on offense.

29. Kansas City Chiefs: LB Mack Wilson (Alabama)

Top needs: LB, CB, OLB

The pick: Wilson replaces another Alabama LB in Ragland. KC must focus on D.

Other options: Anything on defense, because the offense is fine.

30. Green Bay Packers (via NO): WR Parris Campbell (Ohio State)

Top needs: OLB, S, WR

The pick: Campbell provides a serious second-option to Davante Adams. Help Rodgers.

Other options: OLB if not taken at pick 12. One of the safeties.

31. Los Angeles Rams: OLB Jaylon Ferguson (Louisiana Tech)

Top needs: LB, OLB, DT

The pick: LAR relies on "cheat code" Aaron Donald to hide their lack of other front 7 players.

Other options: Any front 7 position.

32. New England Patriots: WR Andy Isabella (Massachusetts)

Top needs: WR, DE, LB

The pick: Isabella is the prototypical "Patriots" player. He'd be a perfect WR if he had size.

Other options: None. Isabella is the only possible pick.
