Reviewing The 2017 NFL Draft in 2018: #3 Solomon Thomas, SF vs. #19 O.J. Howard, TB

Reviewing The 2017 NFL Draft in 2018: #3 Solomon Thomas, SF vs. #19 O.J. Howard, TB

We have a football season in the books and now we can look back and try to evaluate or re-evaluate the 2017 NFL Draft…and kinda re-remember what seemed important about a year ago – ultimately, to judge what would be done differently today or where teams made mistakes.

I like doing these types of things in head-to-head battles because it forces me to consider a simple choice…A or B. I can focus on the two players, get reacquainted with their 2017 season and pick the one I would select if I were an NFL GM today. I look at it like I’m starting an expansion franchise…so, I want the best player, obviously, but I have to consider positional scarcity and history, etc.

We’ll do one matchup per day in February until we crown a winner. Set up tournament style with 1-32 seed, and #1 facing #32 first round, etc.

#3 Solomon Thomas, SF vs. #19 O.J. Howard, TB

I’m torn.

Solomon Thomas is a very solid DE prospect but shows signs of being a phenomenal 4-3 DT if he was used that way. The 4-3 DT potential is alluring.

O.J. Howard plays a less important (big picture) NFL position, but he may be the single best constructed human to ever play that position – elite speed and agility, very good hands, and a tough, willing blocker. He does it all. He’s a weapon for fantasy and for the NFL.

I know DE/DT is more important in the big picture but I’m getting worried Thomas wants to be a DE only, and that’s good; it works…but I want to see if he could be Aaron Donald-ish but I don’t think he wants that. Because he might just be a ‘good’ DE and Howard may be the best TE in football in 2020-2025…I’ll take the very rare bird TE – O.J. Howard, but you can’t go wrong either way.
