2018 Senior Bowl Daily Notes (Practice Day 1/TUE) *6:14pmET

Air Date:
January 23, 2018

Practices wrapped up at 6pm. The guys that most caught my attention today...

WR J'Mon Moore

OG Will Hernandez

RB Kallen Ballage

DE Chad Thomas...didn't grab me at the E-W game, but I'm starting to see it now.

We'll pick back up with coverage of practices tomorrow around 1pmET or so.

-- NC State's Jaylen Samuels is taking handoffs like a tailback and he looks good. He played TE-H-back-RB in college but he just looks and moves like a power RB for the NFL.

-- Arizona RB Kallen Ballage looks great...really impressive in the non-contact O vs. D drills. His on-field look and his stat performance are at odds.

-- UTEP OG Will Hernandez is squashing every pass rusher he faces in the one-on-one drills. Best OL of the day.

-- Miami, FLA DE Chad Thomas is rocketing up the draft boards. He just looks like the prototypical edge pass rusher.

-- The NFL analyst community is doing all that they can to promote Josh Allen as a top guy, and trying to compare him to Carson Wentz. Those two QBs are nothing alike whatsoever.

-- Josh Allen is trying to show how strong his arm is and it's backfiring...he's throwing so hard the receivers are dropping his passes. They explain this as receivers need to adjust...not as Allen needs to learn the proper velocity -- because THEY are in love with Allen and everything is through a pro-Allen prism.

-- Penn WR Justin Watson starting to show his Chris Hogan skills.

-- Miami WR Braxton Barrios looks a lot better here than he did in the Miami pass game. I think the Hurricanes passing game didn't suit him fully. He's Trent Taylor-like.

4:27pmET: More practice observations...

-- Big hitch in Virginia QB Kurt Benkert's throws.

-- I can't fully put my finger on it but LSU RB Darrel Williams catches my attention as the sneaky-best RB prospect here.

-- Indiana TE Ian Thomas is getting a lot of work/show as a 'starter' for the South it feels like.

-- 'Smitten'...very smitten with WR J'Mon Moore. I look forward to going into more detail on his studies. My first intro and then watching him at the first SB it.

-- The TE everyone wanted to see...Dallas Goedert, South Dakota St -- left practice with a hamstring.

-- So Miss RB Ito Smith is a little bulldog and very fleet feet, better than I picked up on scouting some of his tape.

3:44pmET: Practice observations...

-- Georgia OG Isaiah Wynn looks great among the blockers early on. He jumped off the one-on-one drills to me. Quick feet backpedaling and powerful to move pass rushers away with ease.

-- Saw a picture of Nathan Peterman from the 2017 Senior Bowl...they don't seem to be mentioning him as 'alumni' in advertisements. I remember quite well...he was the entire analyst's booths favorite QB prospect at the Senior Bowl last year.

-- Mason Rudolph being interviewed...he's media ready out the box. He's the face of a franchise.

-- Mizzu WR J'Mon Moore just jumps out at me, the best WR prospect at the Senior Bowl. His feet are so fast that he's near impossible to cover on his routes. His stop-starts and cuts are unteachable with his abilities.

I see Moore rated #11-20 among 2018 WR prospects on various scouting services...a 3rd-4th round projection.

-- If you're looking to be this game...the North stands out to me right now. I bet the North will be -3.5 favorites if Baker Mayfield plays, and -1.5 if he doesn't.

-- A lot of buzz for UTSA DE Marcus Davenport...he seems to be the media's 'it' non-QB. he has the perfect look for a DE, has a nice burst off the snap. He didn't really dominate on the stat sheets, which is odd and a bad sign.

Davenport came in 6'5.7"/259 pounds with 34.0" arms and 9.0" hand size.

2017 1st-Round picks from the Senior Bowl...

Haason Reddick

O.J. Howard

Evan Engram

Tre'Davious White

-- Watching Josh Allen's interview...someone got a hold of him and has him running a 'political campaign' to get picked by the Browns. He's saying all the right things...talking about growing up on a farm, hard work, loves his dad...America and apple pie. He's making his Midwest appeal.

2:00pmET: Random Observations...

-- Everyone is all about Baker Mayfield's arrival, and how tall he'll measure. He is beyond the 'buzz' player everyone is focused on. Supposed to be in by 330pm Mobile time. Not sure he's going to play in the game Saturday but he will practice.

-- The Josh Allen sucker's bet is in full have NFL teams trying to con the Browns into using a #1 pick on him, and a media too stupid to know any better so they actually think he's in the #1 overall debate. Allen is in no way a top 100 prospect. I wouldn't even draft him. He's one of the worst QBs 'on paper' our scouting models have seen in a while.

1:30pmET: Right now, day-one, the players I'm going to be watching the most intently...

TE Dallas Goedert, South Dakota

WR J'Mon Moore, Missouri

RB Rashaad Penny, San Diego State

WR Jaleel Scott, New Mexico State

WR Justin Watson, Pennsylvania

FB/RB/TE Jaylen Samuels, N.C. State

RB Kalen Ballage, Arizona State\

I'll be posting practice notes here all day
