2020 Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft, Five Rounds with Commentary (from the 1.06 Spot)

Air Date:
July 20, 2020

For a 12 day stretch/series, I’m going to do a five round Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft from each of the #1-12 spots and publish them one each day with some basic commentary – just to show the direction I’ve been seeing/advising on 2020 Dynasty Rookie Drafts.

Of course, my primary goal in the 2020 DRD is to trade my 1st-round pick for a king’s ransom or just a better existing player or packaging up the later 1st-round pick (#3 or 4-12) + player that I want to deal away in exchange for a bigger player I’m desiring. Be that as it may…with this exercise I’m just going to go through and make my picks as if I have to and I’ll explain why.

Many/most of the mock DRDs will look similar after round #1, I assume, but we’ll see. I’ll be using FantasyPros’s mock draft tool and thus working with their ‘expert rankings’ + system for mocks.

My plan in each pick scenario is basically…

1st-round plan = best available (if you’re forcing me to pick), but I’m not really interested in the prospects (for now/2020 valuation) after the 1.02 pick (so, disliking 1.03/1.04 on)…after CEH and Jon Taylor go, I could care less about this 2020 DRD, in as far as making picks.

I’ll be making picks mostly on a ‘best available’ basis, and I’ll explain why/what I did what I did when I make the pick.

2nd-round plan = Bryan Edwards is my main target, but he’ll be gone after #17-20 in most DRDs. I will likely/potentially pick Edwards late 1st-round in many instances if I fear/know I won’t get him 2nd-round…depends on what is left at the later 1st-round spots.

I’m also eyeing Zack Moss and Josh Kelley as options after Edwards, especially where I own Devin Singletary (as I do, a lot). Chase Claypool is my fallback 2nd-round pick (whom I love, but don’t like his value vs. trading out of the 2nd-round…I can go get Claypool in October or Jan. 2021).

3rd-round plan = I really despise the draft from here on in, but not so much if Moss or Kelley, or Chase Claypool falls to me (as is happening more and more with Claypool). I am looking at flyers like Justin Herbert, Lynn Bowden, or mostly Devin Duvernay (whom I love but HATE this landing spot). I could go Jalen Hurts as well…he’s the one guy from here on if he HAS to start…he’s a ‘1’ at his position (QB1).

4th-round plan = More flyers…my favorites are Jalen Hurts, or I might go Joe Reed as a WR prospect who might convert to RB, and his RB physical profile is sweet.

5th-round plan = Joe Reed is great. I could also take a flyer on RBs like Mike Warren, James Robinson, and Raymond Calais. Robinson is growing on me especially where I have Leonard Fournette investment.

6th-round plan = Usually, always available is TE Colby Parkinson…unless you play in a league with other FFM/CFMers.

With that base plan, let’s let ‘er rip and go through 12 mock DRDs in 12 days…

2020 Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft, Five Rounds with Commentary (from the 1.06 Spot)

1st-Round (pick 1.06)

OK, this is where I start to freak out…CEH and Taylor gone, as you’d expect, and now Dobbins gone too. Now, I’m either picking a player to trade immediately or reaching for Michael Pittman or Denzel Mims.

I think Pittman is going to be a star…I’d consider taking him here, but I also don’t know who his QB will be in 2021…and I know he’s the kind of guy you can buy in October for a discount if you really want him.

I think Denzel Mims is wonderful, it’s just Sam Darnold scares the hell out of me (see: Robby Anderson going to waste there). Pittman and Mims are two really excellent, potential superstar WRs. Or…do I take D’Andre Swift to hope he's a great PPR worker or just trade him?

The giddy FF player in me wants to ‘be in the action’ and take an exciting rookie WR that I love. The FF-prudent part of me knows these WRs will flop )needing time to adjust) out of the gates and start losing value fast…I can capitalize on that later. I have to be smart and know rookie WRs are an alluring, lethal, expensive siren call.

Swift…if he’s named starter or co-starter and/or has a good preseason moment, people will lose their minds. Last year, do you know who the top rookie RB taken in some DRDs and many redrafts was a week+ before the season began? Not Josh Jacobs…it was David Montgomery, because he had a moment in a preseason game and Jacobs sat most of the preseason. If I can get that ‘ride’ with Swift, I can use it to my advantage before the season even begins.

I take Swift here…and I’m looking to deal him.

1.1 Jonathan Taylor

1.2 C. Edwards-Helaire

1.3 CeeDee Lamb

1.4 J.K. Dobbins

1.5 Cam Akers

1.6 D'Andre Swift

1.7 Tua Tagovailoa

1.8 Jerry Jeudy

1.9 Jalen Reagor

1.10 Justin Jefferson

1.11 Ke'Shawn Vaughn

1.12 Henry Ruggs III

2nd-Round (pick 2.06)

Lot’s of good choices here…Burrow, Edwards, Moss, Dillon. Somehow Tua was 1.07 and Joe Burrow is available to me at 2.06, ummm, OK. I do like it when FantasyPros has a little randomness to add spice every once in a while.

I’d go Burrow if I needed a QB/QB depth.

Dillon if I needed RB depth.

Edwards is my primary want because he’s a fave.

However, my 1st-round pick was an RB who I plan to trade…so, I might rather add an RB that I believe in. So, let’s mix it up from my norm and go A.J. Dillon here, since they gave me him as an opportunity here.

2.1 M. Pittman

2.2 Denzel Mims

2.3 Tee Higgins

2.4 L. Shenault

2.5 Brandon Aiyuk

2.6 A.J. Dillon

2.7 Joe Burrow

2.8 A. McFarland

2.9 Bryan Edwards

2.10 Antonio Gibson

2.11 Chase Claypool

2.12 Zack Moss

3rd-Round (pick 3.06)

Do I go Darrynton Evans just to own a handcuff I could trade (or maybe Henry gets hurt)…or go with the guy I like for instant impact if thrust into the job in Jalen Hurts? I have more faith in Hurts, so I’ll go there if I’m picking on a hope the starter above them gets hurt…but Evans isn’t a bad pick here either.

3.1 Joshua Kelley

3.2 Lynn Bowden Jr.

3.3 KJ Hamler

3.4 Devin Duvernay

3.5 Justin Herbert

3.6 Jalen Hurts

3.7 Jordan Love

3.8 Lamical Perine

3.9 Darrynton Evans

3.10 Van Jefferson

3.11 Eno Benjamin

3.12 Adam Trautman

4th-Round (pick 4.06)

I might should have gone with Evans and hoped Hurts fell to the 4th, but it probably would have been a pipe dream. Now, I’ll do my typical…Joe Reed in the 4th, hoping he is a Deebo Samuel-like breakout someday.

4.1 A. Gandy-Golden

4.2 Quintez Cephus

4.3 Jacob Eason

4.4 DeeJay Dallas

4.6 Joe Reed

4.8 Gabriel Davis

4.9 Tyler Johnson

4.10 Jason Huntley

4.11 Harrison Bryant

4.12 Devin Asiasi

5th-Round (pick 5.06)

As always, I take TE Colby Parkinson in the 5th.

5.1 James Robinson

5.2 James Proche

5.3 Albert Okwuegbunam

5.4 Isaiah Hodgins

5.5 Brycen Hopkins
