2021 Devy Prospect Previews: CBs Patrick Surtain (Alabama) and Shaun Wade (Ohio State)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

CB Patrick Surtain (Alabama) *JR

6’2”/203

2019: 42 total tackles, 8 PDs, 2 INTs (12g)

Preview Grade = B-

Solid cover corner…well-schooled, might be a ‘B’. I didn’t see any ‘A’. I saw an NFL athlete with plus size who was solid in coverage, and I watched him against LSU…and Joe Burrow wanted nothing to do with him. Never even looked his way hardly. Surtain wasn’t covering great against LSU, was a bit sloppy…but they still stayed away. That says something. Weak tackler. Plays a bit too soft for me. I’m not wildly impressed but he’s a legit NFL prospect…weak for IDP/fantasy output potentially.

Reminds me of: Lesser, bigger Marlon Humphrey.

CB Shaun Wade (Ohio State) *JR

6’1”/194

2019: 26 total tackles, 7 PDs, 1 INT, 4.0 TFLs (11)

Preview Grade = A-/B+

Great length/wingspan for coverage. Plays corner like a safety…he is a hard hitter, like a linebacker in a thin-framed CB body…it’s wild to watch. Looks like he is the next great OSU corner, and maybe the best of the recent OSU bunch -- we’ll see when he steps into the spotlight/#1 role in 2020.

Reminds me of: Bradley Roby.
