2021 Devy Prospect Previews: DLs Joe Tryon (Washington) and Jaylen Twyman (Pitt)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

DE Joe Tryon (Washington)

6’4”/262

2019: 41 total tackles, 12.5 TFLs, 8.0 sacks (13g)

Preview Grade = C

He’s another “I need to see the Combine numbers” prospect. He looks solid but I wasn’t blown away by what I saw. Definitely an NFL body working against college blockers. I didn’t see lightning speed or get off from the snap, but it was good…very good for college play. I have to just assume a ‘C’ and wait for more info/watch more tape. I didn’t get a vibe one way or the other from a quick preview.

Reminds me of: Curtis Weaver (a top DE prospect going into the Combine, and then a bad Combine dropped him like a stone).

DT Jaylen Twyman (Pitt)

6’1”/290

2019: 41 total tackles, 12.0 TFLs, 10.5 sacks (13g)

Preview Grade = C+

Plays DT like a DE…looks like a svelte DE prospect, but he’s working as a 4-3 DT mostly for Pitt. If Twyman really is 290+ pounds, with his physique and quickness – then he might be an ‘A’ prospect. But I have a feeling he’s more 275-pounds and then he’s too small for a high-end NFL DT and too slow for a high-end NFL DE. I’ll need the real Combine numbers to make this call for real…next year.

Reminds me of: Maurice Hurst.
