2021 Devy Prospect Previews: EDGE Greg Rousseau (Miami, Fla.) and Carlos Basham (Wake Forest)
Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.
EDGE Greg Rousseau (Miami, Fla.) *JR
6’6”/251
2019: 54 total tackles, 19.5 TFLs, 15.5 sacks, 2 FF (13g)
Preview Grade = A-
Great length, reach. He definitely looks like the advertised 6’6” is more real than not. Moves like an outside linebacker at the size of an NFL Edge/D-end. Not a power rusher, per se, but a big, sleek speed rusher…like Montez Sweat, maybe better (we’ll have to see the Combine numbers).
Reminds me of: Danielle Hunter, maybe? Montez Sweat…a better or worse version, remains to be seen.
EDGE Carlos Basham (Wake Forest)
6’5”/275
2019: 57 total tackles, 18.0 TFLs, 10.0 sacks, 3 FF (13g)
Preview Grade = C-/D+
I watched Miami, Florida’s Greg Rousseau right before Basham…and Rousseau has the ‘it’ for the NFL. And then I watched Basham and was put to sleep immediately…nothing like Rousseau. Basham has a boring, tentative style of play…more finesse than aggressive/power.
Big body, college-good athlete but looks a little average or below average for the NFL as an athlete off the edge. Not fast enough for a speed rush, but too small to shift into a DT role, I think. He’s going to be a ‘tweener’ that doesn’t payoff for fantasy. Might be a nice 3-4 DE for a team, but that’s a death sentence for no IDP stats generated. From what I see, I’m not interested so far.
Reminds me of: Tarell Basham…who may be his brother for all I know. A 3rd-round pick for Indy a few years ago and they gave up on him quickly. Now of the Jets.
