2021 Devy Prospect Previews: LBs Chazz Surratt (UNC) and Nick Bolton (Missouri)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

LB Chazz Surratt (UNC)

6’3”/230

2019: 115 total tackles, 15.0 TFLs, 6.5 sacks (13g)

Preview Grade = B

The unusual QB-to-ILB conversion in college. Played a lot of games/started some for UNC as a freshman/2017 at QB, and then got hurt and lost most of his 2018 season and then converted to ILB in 2019 and was 2nd in the ACC in total tackles…two years prior he was 7th in the ACC in passer efficiency.

Surratt is a legit NFL LB prospect, but probably more as an OLB. He’s not the greatest tackler, but makes up for that with higher speed/agility, an ability to get to plays or rush the backfield at a high level but doesn’t always make sure tackles that I see…he’s a grab up high and wrestle to the ground kinda tackler not a clean waist hit and take them out pure hitter. He can improve upon that.

Reminds me of: Myles Jack.

LB Nick Bolton (Missouri)

6’0”/235

2019: 103 total tackles, 8.5 TFLs, 1.0 sacks, 7 PDs, 2 INTs (12g)

Preview Grade = B

A legit NFL middle linebacker. Solid athleticism. Built short/compact, but very strong and quick. Aggressive, smart pursuer of ballcarriers in the interior but is very comfortable dropping back into coverage. A very sound, hard-hitting tackler. He’s just a solid football player, who might be an ‘A’ potentially…or might be a ‘C’ if the official Combine speed/size is an issue. He’s a ‘player’, he’s going to be in the NFL…how high the ceiling is we’ll see.

Reminds me of: Shaq Thompson.
