2021 Devy Prospect Previews: QBs Jamie Newman (Georgia) and Zerrick Cooper (Jacksonville)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

QB Jamie Newman (transferring to Georgia)

6’3”/225

2019: 60.9% Comp Pct., 2,868 pass yards, 26 TDs/11 INTs, 180-574-6 rush (12g)

Preview Grade = D

Advertised as a great deep ball thrower and nice runner of the ball…but he’s really a no-read throw deep up for grabs on any one-on-one and allow an all-star cast of WRs (at Wake) to make streetball plays on his passes. There’s no meticulous pocket passer, reader of defenses here. He runs slow…maybe a 4.8+ with 7.2+ three-cone. He’s a very good/solid college QB, very patient and smart and confident but has little-to-nothing for a translation to the NFL. He was destroyed by Clemson in the 2019 game I watched…they exposed the fraud here. One of the biggest fraud prospects of the 2021 batch I’ve researched so far.

Reminds me of: Jacoby Brissett.

QB Zerrick Cooper (Jacksonville) *rJR

6’3”/225

2019: 59.2% Comp Pct., 3,404 pass yards, 28 TDs/12 INTs, 136-320-6 rush (12g)

Preview Grade = D-

Big, thick, stiff athlete. Not very fast (for the pros) with no real agility. Strong arm but weak accuracy. Not meticulous in reading the field, throws into traffic too often…more of a no-read/predetermined thrower of the ball especially against better competition. I don’t see any cause for NFL excitement here at this point.

Reminds me of: DeShone Kizer
