2021 Devy Prospect Previews: QBs Tanner Morgan (Minnesota) and Justin Crum (Kent State)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

QB Tanner Morgan (Minnesota)

6’3”/215

2019: 66.0%, 3,253, 30 TDs/7 INTs, 61 yds rush, 1 TD (13g)

Preview Grade = D

About the equivalent of a solid backup QB in the NFL, but he doesn’t have the size or the footspeed of anything exciting at QB for the pros. Is good for college. Average arm. Below average feet. Decent instincts. Does what P.J. Fleck QBs do…throw a lot of predetermined slants. Morgan also had two excellent WRs…maybe the best 1-2 WR punch in the nation to work with (people will realize that 2-3 years from now, though).

Reminds me of: Kirk Cousins ceiling, more likely Chase Daniel/Matt Moore reality.

QB Dustin Crum (Kent State)

6’2”/200

2019: 69.3%, 2,625 yards pass, 20 TDs/2 INTs, 707 yds rush, 6 TDs (13g)

Preview Grade = D

Incredible numbers in 2019. But the tape doesn’t match the numbers. Crum is a smaller, very below average-armed QB prospect that the NFL will simply ignore. He has decent footspeed but he’s not like a Lamar Jackson or even a Taysom Hill. He’s college good/great and NFL undesired I would imagine.

Reminds me of: Lesser Easton Stick and not-as-good John Wolford.
