2021 Devy Prospect Previews: QBs Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) and Brock Purdy (Iowa State)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

QB Trevor Lawrence, Clemson (Jr.)

6’5”/220

2019: 65.8% Comp Pct., 3,665 pass yards, 36 TDs/8 INTs (15g)

Preview Grade = A-

All the tools…great size, arm, maturity, can run the ball way better than was given credit early in his career. He’s a ‘can’t miss’ type of prospect…and ‘everybody knows it’. No secret here. He’ll be a #1 pick and insta-starter in the NFL in 2021. I don’t know if he’s AS great as everyone thinks…but he’s really good, nonetheless.

The only hesitation from getting too excited here is that Lawrence really struggled with out of conference Ga Tech, Ohio State, and LSU last year…3 TDs/2 INTs all games under 260 yards passing. There were some cracks in his game in 2019. But he’s young and at a top program playing top teams and he possesses all the tools…you can’t bet against him at this stage. The NFL intelligentsia is already locked in on him as ‘the best’, so he’s got a free pass to the top.

Reminds me of: More mobile Peyton Manning, a better Justin Herbert.

QB Brock Purdy, Iowa State (Jr)

6’0”/210

2019: 65.7% Comp Pct., 3,982 pass yards, 27 TDs/9 INTs (13g)

Preview Grade = B

Wow…instant love. Wait…hold your horses…the NFL scouts and analysts are going to hate him and he’s going to have an uphill battle to get to NFL legitimacy. Purdy is Gardner Minshew-like…undersized/short, cannon arm, excellent reader of the defense, annoyingly mobile/scrambling.

41 TDs/16 INTs his first two seasons and 13 rushing TDs (22 games). Has thrown for 300+ yards in a game in six of his last 11 games. Doing work with weaker talent and blocking around him. He’s really good, but he’s going to be overlooked for the NFL for sure…which makes him a shaky Devy/FF prospect valuation. Low key Heisman potential here in 2020…

Reminds me of: Gardner Minshew
