2021 Devy Prospect Previews: RB Kenny Gainwell (Memphis) and Keaontay Ingram (Texas)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

RB Kenny Gainwell (Memphis)

5’11”/191

2019: 231-1,459-13, 51-610-3 (14g)

Preview Grade = B+

Another ‘wow’ player…this time a ‘wow’ of a receiving back prospect for the NFL. Incredible agility, maybe the best in this class…and best by far, potentially, like a 6.5+ three-cone shiftiness/agility. Good straight-line speed and good+ hands in the passing game. He works as a running back and as a slot WR.

If you watch his highlights and see the moves that he can/does make on defenders…you’ll know why I’m excited. Wildly impressed with my introduction here.

Reminds me of: Austin Ekeler, Tarik Cohen, Darren Sproles thrown into a blender.

RB Keaontay Ingram (Texas)

6’0”/220

2019: 144-853-7, 29-242-3 (13g)

Preview Grade = C

Capable NFL RB prospect. I don’t see any star qualities, but Ingram has NFL size, solid enough straight line speed, has OK agility/quick feet, and catches the ball pretty well. Nothing about his tape says, ‘wow’…but nothing is terrible either. Looks like a 4th-5th+ round pick who is a backup looking for a chance in his first 2-3 NFL years type of RB prospect.

Reminds me of: Melvin Gordon-ish, but note I think Gordon is terribly overrated and shouldn’t even be an NFL starter. Never did.
