2021 Devy Prospect Previews: RB Travis Etienne (Clemson) and RB Journey Brown (Penn State)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

RB Travis Etienne (Clemson)

5’10”/210

2019: 207-1,614-19 rush, 37-432-4 rec. (15g)

Preview Grade = C+/C

A capable RB on a high-end offense/team beating up on Wofford and various midland ACC teams, for the most part, and then looking very plain against Alabama (14-86-2), Ohio State (10-36-1), LSU (15-78-1), Texas A&M (16-53-0).

He’s a similar, lesser D’Andre Swift – solid size, decent runner but a bit tentative, good hands and moves in the passing game…solid across the board but not great at anything. The ‘Clemson’ name will carry him to prospect heights he doesn’t belong.

Reminds me of: Lesser D’Andre Swift.

RB Journey Brown (Penn State)

5’11”/206

2019: 129-890-12 rush, 15-134-1 (13g)

Preview Grade = A-

I’m 20+ Devy prospects into my summer previews and this would be my bet to win the Heisman, if Trevor Lawrence doesn’t. This is a ‘wow’ prospect. He might be a 4.28-4.35 runner at 206 pounds. He has the best feet BY FAR of anyone I’ve seen in this preview…or if I placed him in the 2019 NFL Draft…or 2018…maybe the quickest feet at RB that I’ve seen in a long time. He just bounces and glides as he goes, and if he has a seam…he has the type of speed that allows him to race past situations it doesn’t look like a human could and if he’s got the one-step lead, no one is catching him from behind.

Brown was quietly a backup, lightly used rotational RB to start the 2019 season and then broke out in PSU’s final five games…78-593-9 or 17.2 carries for 118.7 yards (6.9 ypc) and 1.8 TDs rushing per game in that span, and an Alamo Bowl MVP (16-202-2) to cap off the season.

Brown has breakaway speed, is highly agile/evasive, and has pretty good hands in the passing game as well. You’d like him to be 10+ pounds bigger for the NFL is about the only real knock I see on him. He’s a ‘wow’. If you watch some of his tape on YouTube, you’ll be in the ‘wow’ camp too.

Reminds me of: What everyone wishes Miles Sanders was. I don’t know if old/peak Chris Johnson should be thrown around here, but…
