2021 Devy Prospect Previews: TEs Kyle Pitts (Florida) and Pat Freiermuth (Penn State)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

TE Kyle Pitts (Florida)

6’5”/240

2019: 54-649-5 (13g)

Preview Grade = A+

The first ‘wow’ player I’ve watched in this Devy process. Excellent feet…I mean, maybe the best feet I’ve ever seen on a tight end prospect…just wow. I’m not sure how his 40-time foot speed rates with Evan Engram or Noah Fant, but the quickness factor off the snap…just wow. Human tight ends should not move like this.

Pitts has plus 'hands', speed, burst, with the right size and looks aggressive blocking. It’s possible (and allow me the grace that I haven’t gone fully into his scouting)...but it’s possible this is the best constructed TE for fantasy purposes I’ve ever seen/quick scouted.

Reminds me of: If Darren Waller, Noah Fant, and Mike Evans combined to form one human…and that human played tight end at Florida.

TE Pat Freiermuth (Penn State)

6’5”/256

2019: 43-507-7 (13g)

Preview Grade = B/B-

A very good college tight end presence…clearly a better than your average college TE. Nice size. Decent athleticism. Good hands. A very solid tight end, but I’m not overwhelmed watching his tape. I can see he’s good…but more in the Jake Butt (memba him?) or T.J. Hockenson kinda way more than a Travis Kelce way. He might be somewhere in between all of them. There’s an NFL TE here, and the media will probably hype it like they did with Hockenson…but don’t see as high of a ceiling here. Very capable, yes. Could be FF-nice in the right spot (like if he were on the Packers today).

Reminds me of: A better Jake Butt…who might have been really solid if he didn’t keep blowing out his knee. More Austin Hooper than Travis Kelce, maybe.
