2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Justyn Ross (Clemson) and Warren Jackson (Colorado St.)

2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Justyn Ross (Clemson) and Warren Jackson (Colorado St.)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

WRs Justyn Ross (Clemson)

6’3”/205

2019: 66-865-8 rec. (15g)

Preview Grade = D

Tall, lanky, slow out of gates, overrated WR prospect. He gets a bump for being a decent college WR on a top/dominant program where he can take the lesser coverages (because he’s not a #1 WR) and put up good numbers in a great offense. Maybe he grows more with another year of seasoning, but my first glance was nothing special at all.

But more concerning, Ross had to have a congenital fusion in his spine in June 2020…and he’s already out for the 2020 season. A big blow to his NFL prospects. He’s a bad body type, over-hyped player analysts ‘know’ because he plays for a high-profile school, and now a spine fusion for bulging discs…I think I’ll pass on this for Devy/Dynasty.

Reminds me of: A bad Tee Higgins…a Tee Higgins who we graded poorly too.

WR Warren Jackson (Colorado St.)

6’5”/219

2019: 77-1119-8 rec. (10g)

Preview Grade = B/B-

He has that 6’5”/6’6” look about him and in his play (we’ll see the real height measurement next year)…he’s just bigger than everyone on the secondaries he’s facing. He’s like a man playing with boys at times. He’s not just height domination, although that’s key…he’s got good speed/athleticism and decent hands. Jackson has a lot of indicators of ‘star’…like a huge season is coming if he can stay healthy. He’s got a bit of a slender frame and has missed a game or two in each of his three seasons.

There’s some Kenny Golladay type look here, but I’m not totally sure how tough/how Jackson will hold up against better/more physical CBs as he goes. So far, I like what I see…but need to see more against better coverage. He could be an ‘A’…he could be a ‘C’.

Reminds me of: A little Kenny Golladay, a little Denzel Mims look…but cannot swear that he’s as fast, as agile a receiver as those guys. Could be a great 2021 prospect…or could be he gets lost in a 5th-round+ grading shuffle with ‘height’ as the thing that people notice about him/what keeps him on the prospect radar.
