2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Rashod Bateman (Minnesota) and Rondale Moore (Purdue)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

WR Rashod Bateman (Minnesota)

6’2”/210

2019: 60-1,219-11 rec. (13g)

Preview Grade = A-/B+

If Michael Thomas was faster…that’s what comes to mind when I watch Bateman, initially. Quasi-Diontae Johnson feet with a Michael Thomas-ish body/style. Bateman being a faster version of Michael Thomas means he can get open on anyone short/medium working the timing pattern game but then Bateman has the ability to blaze DBs deep or take bubble screens and make plays. In the argument for best WR talent for 2021, at this stage.

Reminds me of: Faster thinner, thinner (today, can bulk up) Michael Thomas.

WR Rondale Moore (Purdue)

5’9”/180

2019: 29-387-2 rec. (4g…missed rest of season with a hamstring injury)

Preview Grade = B-/C+

Might be more of a ‘B’ grade. Hard to ascertain if he’s more college-good than serious, high end NFL WR. He’s versatile and tough – great after the catch, can run the ball, and works in the return game. He’s a legit NFL opportunity…but I just don’t see that little ‘it’ factor that gets me fired up about him for the pros. James Proche was a great college WR, but suspect for the pros…Moore is a similar, better, version of that vibe.

Reminds me of: Smaller, more versatile D.J. Moore at-best…or James Proche on the downside (just solid, not anything special).
