2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Seth Williams (Auburn) and Anthony Schwartz (Auburn)

2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Seth Williams (Auburn) and Anthony Schwartz (Auburn)

Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.

WRs Seth Williams (Auburn)

6’2”/222

2019: 659-830-8 rec. (12g)

Preview Grade = C-

I watched him on tape against LSU, and he was stymied and then some by their NFL secondary. I saw nothing from Williams that impressed me (when some think he’s the best WR in college). Thick, solid like a small TE…but limited athlete and so-so hands. I didn’t see any reason to place him on a pedestal at all. He looked big and stiff, which he can get away with in college but won’t be a coveted pro prospect. Maybe the poor Auburn QB/passing game is hiding him from me in the preview…but I never saw him open downfield ever in the LSU game and he butchered some simple opportunities as well.

Reminds me of: Half as talented former Auburn star WR Duke Williams (now of Buffalo, a UDFA his rookie year).

WR Anthony Schwartz (Auburn)

6’0”/180

2019: 41-44-1 rec., 11-118-2 rush (11g)

Preview Grade = B/B-

My first thought watching highlights: A legit track star…some argue the fastest player in college football. Plays like a track star…nice speed, not much raw football talent, not very physical. His weapon is speed and he is fast…but I was not totally amazed, not like I was watching a better Tyreek Hill or anything. But when he is going straight…he's moving rapidly. Side-to-side/agility, evasiveness…not so much of a ‘wow’. We’ll see if there is growth as a WR in 2020. You have to grade him solidly on his speed gift alone…a speed gift not many have been endowed with.

My thoughts after a little more tape: There might be something more here. He does flash some toughness and some WR skills despite his ‘meh’ numbers. The Auburn QB stinks, and that didn’t help. The more I watched…the more I saw the raw potential and I was getting frustrated by the inability of Auburn to get him the ball more. His speed is real and might make him an ‘A’ at some point after the 2020 season.

Reminds me of: I had visions of Ted Ginn, but also some Parris Campbell potential (he’s not there yet). He may really rise during/after his 2020 season.
