2021 Devy Prospect Previews: WRs Tylan Wallace (Oklahoma St.) and Cade Johnson (So. Dakota St.)
Devy Disclaimer: I only take a quick look at some game tape and review background data on each prospect – it’s a very preliminary look that I could change my mind on with deeper study a year later when these prospects do hit the college all-star bowl games and work the NFL Combine and Pro Days. I don’t have all the data, today, that I need/want for a comprehensive scouting and I’m not taking anywhere near a full amount of time to tape preview -- I’m giving a knee jerk scouting reaction from a basic intro to the player. The good news is…I’m better at this (scouting) than anyone in the world, so my quick eye test is better than the echo chamber’s/football media’s studies – so, I’m your best hope for an initial preview…but don’t write any of this in stone…it’s early with limited data and a whole season of info/tape/data to come on these guys.
WRs Tylan Wallace (Oklahoma St.)
2019: 53-903-8 rec. (9g)
Preview Grade = B-
Total professional WR. I previewed Wallace last year and then again this year, and have the same thoughts – he’s very smooth, very reliable, very sound. Has no attributes off the charts but has no flaws…is solid at everything. Great routes. Reliable hands. Effortless play. Can work short, middle, deep. He’s just a very good WR prospect.
Reminds me of: Sterling Shepard.
WR Cade Johnson (So. Dakota St.)
2019: 72-1,222-8 rec. (13g)
Preview Grade = B/B-
Tough as nails WR…doesn’t look like it at a glance, looks skinny/nondescript, but he’s Julian Edelman heart of a lion WR with higher end speed/agility (like Edelman). Johnson might be a 4.4s runner with 6.7s three-cone type of quick-footed WR but he works over the middle, he blocks, he doesn’t flinch at anything. He could be a very nice piece of a WR starting group in the NFL someday.
He had 17 TD catches in 2018. Sports a 15.2 yards per carry average on 12 career rushing attempts. Returned two kicks for TD as a freshman. It will be interesting to see how he translated from FCS to the NFL.
Reminds me of: Steven Sims, Julian Edelman, Randall Cobb all blended into one.
