2016 NFL Mock Draft — Xavier Cromartie’s One-Round Mock (9.5) *Post CLE-PHI trade

Xavier Cromartie
Air Date:
April 21, 2016

At College Football Metrics, we want to outperform all other scouting services in correctly evaluating where teams should take prospects in the NFL Draft. But we also want to lead the way in predicting what teams will actually do with their draft picks. In 2015, we made our debut in The Huddle Report’s exclusive, expert-only NFL Draft contests. CFM took 5th place (out of 113) in the mock draft competition and 4th place (out of 56) in the top 100 board competition. In 2016, we want double crowns!

CFM has partnered with Xavier Cromartie (Twitter @xaviercromartie) to produce mock drafts and top 100 prospect boards based on his latest intel, research, and analysis. Xavier was the final grand prize winner of ESPN’s NFL Draft 1st Round Forecast game, and he is the undefeated Play The Draft Champion Emeritus.

Draft scenarios change as new information comes in during draft season, and so we will run updates here as often as Xavier makes adjustments to his mocks and boards.

New position labels:

9T = 9-technique = 3-4 OLB

7T = 7-technique = 4-3 DE

5T = 5-technique = 3-4 DE

3T = 3-technique = 4-3 DE

1T = 1-technique = 4-3 NT

0T = 0-technique = 3-4 NT

$LB = Moneybacker = the Deone Bucannon position

Here’s a quick update of the first-round, after another team sacrificed their future for a quarterback prospect…

Round 1 (team/player/school/ + or – from last report/pick # last report)

  1. Los Angeles Rams (via TEN): QB Jared Goff (Cal) (+) 2

Needs: QB, FS, C, WR, CB

I talked to my quantum mechanics guy and he said it’s Goff.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles (via CLE): QB Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) (-) 1

Needs: CB, G, RB, 7T, QB

We knew the Eagles wanted to rid themselves of anything related to Chip.

  1. San Diego Chargers: CB/S Jalen Ramsey (Florida State) (+) 4

Needs: 5T, LT, FS, C, TE

There could be a trade down to 7 for Buckner. At 3, it may be Ramsey or Bosa instead.

  1. Dallas Cowboys: 7T Joey Bosa (Ohio State) (+) 7

Needs: 7T, 3T, CB, RB, WR

I am thinking that someone snipes Ramsey at 3 and they go with Bosa over Elliott.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: WLB Myles Jack (UCLA) 5

Needs: MLB, SS, 7T, C, CB

I think his knee is fine.

  1. Baltimore Ravens: OT Laremy Tunsil (Mississippi) 6

Needs: 5T, 9T, G, CB, MLB

That’s so Ravens.

  1. San Francisco 49ers: 5T DeForest Buckner (Oregon) (-) 3

Needs: QB, CB, WR, MLB, G

Last of the ‘Big 5′ non-QBs.

  1. Cleveland Browns (via PHI via MIA): OT Ronnie Stanley (Notre Dame) (+) 11

Needs: QB, WR, FS, 9T, MLB

If they trade down again, they still might land Stanley. There is still a lot of talk about trading Joe Thomas.

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: WR Laquon Treadwell (Mississippi) (+) 12

Needs: CB, 7T, FS, RT, WR

This pick is based on the possibility of trading down and/or taking the BPA.

  1. New York Giants: 9T Leonard Floyd (Georgia) (-) 9

Needs: LT, CB, MLB, FS, WR

Sounds like Floyd or Hargreaves.

  1. Chicago Bears: 5T Jarran Reed (Alabama) (+) 16

Needs: LT, CB, 5T, 9T, RB

People call Reed just a run-stuffer, but the Bears run defense has been bad for 3 years.

  1. New Orleans Saints: 3T Sheldon Rankins (Louisville) (+) 14

Needs: 7T, 3T, WR, CB, G

They could trade down for a pass rusher.

  1. Miami Dolphins (via PHI): RB Ezekiel Elliott (Ohio State) (-) 8

Needs: CB, RB, G, WLB, 7T

I don’t know if they get him here or via trade up, but I think they want to make it happen.

  1. Oakland Raiders: CB Vernon Hargreaves (Florida) (-) 10

Needs: 3T, 5T, WLB, SS, RB

Suddenly people have a problem with his size.

  1. Tennessee Titans (via LA): OT Jack Conklin (Michigan State) 15

Needs: RT, SS, FS, CB, WR

Very easy to see this pick happening either here or in the 7-9 range.

  1. Detroit Lions: 1T Vernon Butler (Louisiana Tech) (+) 21

Needs: LT, 3T, 7T, SS, C

I think the Lions love him and so do plenty of other teams.

  1. Atlanta Falcons: WLB Darron Lee (Ohio State) 17

Needs: WLB, TE, SS, WR, 7T

D-line is still an option.

  1. Indianapolis Colts: 9T Noah Spence (Eastern Kentucky) (+) 41

Needs: 9T, RT, 1T, MLB, S

Getting the sense that they’re desperate for a pass rusher.

  1. Buffalo Bills: MLB Reggie Ragland (Alabama) 19

Needs: WLB, 7T, RT, WR, QB

I assume they go defense early and QB in the mid-rounds.

  1. New York Jets: QB Paxton Lynch (Memphis) 20

Needs: 9T, QB, RT, MLB, TE

I don’t know if they get him here or make a crazy trade up. But they seem desperate.

  1. Washington Pigskins: CB William Jackson (Houston) (-) 13

Needs: CB, MLB, 1T, C, WR

Could trade down.

  1. Houston Texans: WR Will Fuller (Notre Dame) 22

Needs: WR, TE, SS, 0T, G

Most people agree on Fuller or Coleman here.

  1. Minnesota Vikings: WR Josh Doctson (Texas Christian) 23

Needs: WR, 3T, CB, C, WLB

Possible trade up.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: WR Corey Coleman (Baylor) (+) 37

Needs: WR, 1T, CB, SS, 7T

Coleman seems likely to be a 1st rounder, but it’s hard to figure where if it’s not here.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: S Keanu Neal (Florida) 25

Needs: SS, CB, 9T, LT, 1T

It’s a good fit.

  1. Seattle Seahawks: OT Germain Ifedi (Texas A&M) 26

Needs: LT, RT, 3T, CB, G

His arms are long, so, yeah, Seahawks.

  1. Green Bay Packers: OT Taylor Decker (Ohio State) (-) 18

Needs: LT, MLB, 1T, TE, 9T

Swing tackle now and future starter.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: CB Eli Apple (Ohio State) 28

Needs: CB, 9T, QB, 5T, WR

Still not ready to change the pick here.

  1. Arizona Cardinals: C Ryan Kelly (Alabama) 29

Needs: SS, C, 9T, CB, MLB

There’s always a safe interior lineman near the end of round 1.

  1. Carolina Panthers: CB Kendall Fuller (Virginia Tech) (+) 33

Needs: CB, SS, LT, RB, 7T

This pick is suddenly very likely to be a CB, if it weren’t already.

  1. Denver Broncos: 5T A’Shawn Robinson (Alabama) 31

Needs: QB, 5T, G, WLB, TE

I’m thinking d-line here and QB a little later.

Dropped out: 5T Chris Jones (21), OT Jason Spriggs (27), 7T Kevin Dodd (31)
