2017 NFL Mock Draft — Xavier Cromartie’s First Round Mock (FINAL)

Author:
Xavier Cromartie
Air Date:
April 26, 2017

The following is the Xavier Cromartie / College Football Metrics FINAL mock draft for entry into The Huddle Report’s mock draft contest. The scoring is 1 point per player correctly predicted in the first round plus 2 points per player linked to the correct team.

Round 1 (team, position, player, school, change from last/last mock pick)

  1. Cleveland Browns: 7T Myles Garrett (Texas A&M) 1

Top needs: 7T, QB, FS

He’s #1 and then it’s a mess afterward.

  1. San Francisco 49ers: SS Jamal Adams (Louisiana State) (+) 6

Top needs: CB, FS, 9T

The media have floated every possibility imaginable. Ultimately, assuming no trade, I think the ex-safety GM takes a safety. Best scheme fit and best player.

  1. Chicago Bears: 3T Jonathan Allen (Alabama) 3

Top needs: 5T, SS, WR

If they’re fine with the medicals it’s an ideal fit.

  1. Jacksonville Jaguars: RB Leonard Fournette (Louisiana State) (-) 2

Top needs: RB, LG, TE

Fournette easily makes the most sense if available. He might not be.

  1. Tennessee Titans (via LAR): TE OJ Howard (Alabama) (+) 16

Top needs: WR, ILB, CB

I’ve become convinced that Howard is too good to make it to 16. TEN might still land him with a trade back to 12. Otherwise Mike Williams.

  1. New York Jets: CB Marshon Lattimore (Ohio State) (-) 5

Top needs: QB, SS, CB

Adams probably isn’t getting here. If NYJ trades down a few slots, Lattimore could still be there if the hamstrings are really scaring teams. Healthy, he belongs up here.

  1. Los Angeles Chargers: FS Malik Hooker (Ohio State) 7

Top needs: RG, 9T, FS

Ideal fit since the draft started and nothing has changed.

  1. Carolina Panthers: RB Christian McCaffrey (Stanford) 8

Top needs: WR, RB, CB

Might have to trade up to get him. Might also have interest in Fournette.

  1. Cincinnati Bengals: 7T Solomon Thomas (Stanford) (+) 12

Top needs: 7T, RB, LT

Still think he’s a media creation.

  1. Buffalo Bills: WR Mike Williams (Clemson) (+) 18

Top needs: CB, WR, ILB

BUF has no future at WR. Might not even have Watkins. Another Clemson pick.

  1. New Orleans Saints: ILB Haason Reddick (Temple) (+) 27

Top needs: CB, 7T, ILB

NO wants to solve the LB problem for good. Play him at WLB.

  1. Cleveland Browns (via PHI): QB Mitchell Trubisky (North Carolina) (-) 4

Top needs: QB, FS, SS

Somehow CLE will figure out how to land him. Perhaps another deal with TEN.

  1. Arizona Cardinals: QB Patrick Mahomes (Texas Tech) 13

Top needs: QB, CB, FS

ARI needs a strong-armed QB for the future.

  1. Philadelphia Eagles (via MIN): ILB Reuben Foster (Alabama) (-) 11

Top needs: CB, RB, WR

I think he’s the guy if he’s there. The question is whether he’s there; he could go #9-13. PHI wants the best talents.

  1. Indianapolis Colts: ILB Jarrad Davis (Florida) (+) 23

Top needs: CB, ILB, 9T

IND needs a leader at ILB. Can get a complementary CB in round 2.

  1. Baltimore Ravens: LT Cam Robinson (Alabama) (+) 20

Top needs: RT, C, 9T

Howard and Williams are likely gone. Ozzie goes with another Alabama guy.

  1. Washington Redskins: 9T Charles Harris (Missouri) (+) 32

Top needs: 5T, 9T, CB

WAS could use another edge to upgrade on Preston Smith.

  1. Tennessee Titans: CB Marlon Humphrey (Alabama) (-) 10

Top needs: CB, ILB, FS

Thinking they’ll get their CB here instead of earlier. Media finally catching up that Hump is ranked pretty high. Also chance for Awoo~ here.

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: RB Dalvin Cook (Florida State) 19

Top needs: RB, TE, CB

Despite the many reports that Cook will fall to round 2, I still feel that Cook will go in the 1st round to PHI or TB.

  1. Denver Broncos: LT Garett Bolles (Utah) (-) 9

Top needs: LT, RB, TE

DEN has to take a left tackle.

  1. Detroit Lions: WR John Ross (Washington) (-) 14

Top needs: ILB, 7T, CB

DET has shown interest in smaller WRs, including Ross.

  1. Miami Dolphins: 7T Derek Barnett (Tennessee) (-) 17

Top needs: FS, RG, CB

MIA needs an impact defender. Jordan Willis could surprise here.

  1. New York Giants: G Forrest Lamp (Western Kentucky) (+) 31

Top needs: 3T, ILB, TE

Unlikely to be Ramczyk. A guard always sneaks in late-1st.

  1. Oakland Raiders: CB/FS Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado) (-) 22

Top needs: ILB, 3T, CB

Awoo~ would seem to be a great fit since he could play slot CB or FS, both of which are needs. Kevin King or Obi are also possible.

  1. Houston Texans: QB Deshaun Watson (Clemson) 25

Top needs: QB, RT, RG

Rick Smith could be ok with Watson despite his weak 46 MPH arm. Maybe a trade up.

  1. Seattle Seahawks: CB/SS Obi Melifonwu (Connecticut) 26

Top needs: CB, LT, SS

He is such a prototypical DB for SEA. Might not make it here.

  1. Kansas City Chiefs: CB Tre’Davious White (Louisiana State) (+) 30

Top needs: ILB, 5T, QB

Solid SEC cover CB fits KC.

  1. Dallas Cowboys: CB Adoree’ Jackson (Southern Cal) (+) 29

Top needs: CB, SS, 7T

Despite all the connections to Jackson, I fear DAL could make a ‘jump’ up to pair Byron with Obi.

  1. Green Bay Packers: CB Kevin King (Washington) (-) 24

Top needs: CB, ILB, 9T

TJ Watt makes sense if available, but GB has Matthews and Perry (with huge contracts) and Fackrell. GB needs 3 CBs in this draft.

  1. Pittsburgh Steelers: 9T TJ Watt (Wisconsin) (-) 28

Top needs: 9T, CB, WR

Ultimately an athletic edge rusher makes the most sense, unless PIT shocks with a QB like Kizer.

  1. Atlanta Falcons: 7T Jordan Willis (Kansas State) (+) NR

Top needs: RG, 7T, 3T

Here it is… the mythical fastball-off-the-edge-to-pair-with-Vic-Beasley™. I’m a bit skeptical of the alleged 2nd-round grades. He’s too good.

  1. New Orleans Saints (via NE): 7T Taco Charlton (Michigan) (-) 21

Top needs: CB, 7T, QB

Taco could go to NO at either 11 or 32. Split opinions on him, but mostly favoring late-1st.

Dropped out: CB Gareon Conley (15)

Left out: WR Corey Davis (medical), TE David Njoku (being a TE), LT Ryan Ramczyk (medical), 9T Takkarist McKinley(medical), CB Quincy Wilson (slow), QB DeShone Kizer (terrible), CB Gareon Conley (panic)
