2022 RC’s Faux/Computer Simulated Season 1.0 (Weeks 1-3)
INTRO:
(Same intro everyday) Four analysts are running their own early models of the 2022 NFL season, as we know it today – looking at the current teams/rosters/starters/depth mixed with the schedule layout.
We will release the simulation results and short commentaries three weeks at a time (Weeks 1-3, 4-6, etc.) by each analyst daily -- and then each analyst will simulate their playoffs all the way up to crowning their early Super Bowl champ. This is pre-work looking for/searching and sharing possible great Over/Under win total bets ahead of the crowd.
The analysts have not seen each other’s simulations…they’ll be seeing them for the first time as the reports release daily for the next 12 days.
Your 2022 Faux 1.0 Analyst Lineup:
Ross Jacobs, FFM analyst (every 8am ET for the entire series)
Xavier Cromartie, long-time contributor/NFL Draft guru (every noonET)
Chris Bilello, Bet the Close Podcast (every 4pmET)
RC Fischer, FFM analyst (every 8pmET)
Hope you enjoy this two-week daily series…it’s all the analyst’s favorite project – one that totally consumes them and drives them mad working on it all, trying to predict the unpredictable…then a major injury will hit in July and/or August and blow all the theories and models all up. But for now, here’s what the analysts are seeing…
RC’s Notes:
-- How about this AFC East start…a three-way tie at (2-1) between the Pats, the Jets, and Dolphins…with the Bills in last place (1-2)! It’s early.
The Bills start the season at LAC, then home with their nemesis TEN, and then one of the worst road games for NFL teams, at Miami.
-- Cincy (2-1) and Tennessee (2-1) take early leads in their division, to no surprise.
-- LAC (3-0) and DEN (3-0) are the only undefeated teams left in the AFC after three weeks. Tied for the AFC West lead.
-- The AFC has the only two winless teams remaining…(0-3) PIT and (0-3) JAX.
-- A mild shock start in the NFC East…NYG (2-1) and WSH (2-1) with the early lead. NYG a win at home over CAR Week 2 then a big win on MNF Week 3 hosting Dallas.
-- A shock tie for the NFC North, MIN, and DET (2-1) out of the gates to lead the way!
-- No surprise that TB (3-0) and SF/LAR (2-1) are out to division leads. The Bucs are the only NFC undefeated.
*For my simulated season, Deshaun Watson is suspended 8 games.

2022 Offseason Assessment Tournament: 1st-Round (PIT v. CLE)
Same intro everyday: Our annual series taking a look at each NFL team’s offseason (free agency, draft, trades) moves and assessing their impact for the upcoming season – simply speaking, 'did all of the offseason moves, en masse, project to make the team better or worse for just the upcoming campaign (not worried about the long-term effect)'?
We’ll list the key adds and losses for each team competing and then comment on them and anoint a winner that will move on to the next round, until we get down to the final two (the 'Super Bowl') and we name a winner for the top offseason (to date). Our way to review and judge what each of these teams have done halfway through the offseason.
1st-Round Matchup…
PITTSBURGH STEELERS
Key Adds:
OL James Daniels (FA), LB Myles Jack (FA), OC Mason Cole (FA), QB Mitchell Trubisky (FA), CB Levi Wallace (FA), CB Ahkello Witherspoon (FA)
QB Kenny Pickett (pick #20), WR George Pickens (pick #52), DL DeMarvin Leal (pick #84), WR Calvin Austin (pick #138), RB Connor Heyward (pick #208)
Key Losses:
QB Big Ben (retired), WR Ray-Ray McCloud (FA), WR JuJu Smith-Schuster, CB Joe Haden (likely loss FA)
vs.
CLEVELAND BROWNS
Key Adds:
QB Deshaun Watson (trade), WR Amari Cooper (trade), LB Chase Winovich (trade)
WR Jakeem Grant (FA), QB Jacoby Brissett (FA), DT Taven Bryan (FA)
CB M.J. Emerson (pick #68), LB Alex Wright Pick #78), WR David Bell (#99), DL Perrion Winfrey (pick #108), PK Cade York (pick #124), RB Jerome Ford (pick #156)
Key Losses:
QB Baker Mayfield (eventually gone), CB Troy Hill (trade), QB Case Keenum (trade), LB Mack Wilson (trade)
TE Austin Hooper (FA), FB Andy Janovich (FA), WR Jarvis Landry (FA), CB M.J. Stewart (FA), OL J.C. Tretter
The Steelers had a void at QB and terrible O-Line and a horrific run defense last year. To fix those issues, they brought in a rookie QB, added one talented O-Lineman and picked up a cast-off linebacker…and burned good picks on the one thing they didn’t need right now – wide receivers.
Pittsburgh dips at QB for 2022. An upgrade a bit at O-Line with James Daniels coming in. A neutral +/- move at CB. For 2022, the Steelers are not ‘the Steelers of old’…they are rebuilding but still throwing half an effort at 2022.
The Browns gave up their soul for Deshaun Watson…one of the most franchise crushing trades and contracts for the years ahead, but we’re focused on 2022 here…and Watson is not much of an upgrade over Baker, but then consider Watson will likely miss 2-4-8 games…so the Browns are not better at QB overall for 2022. They definitely upgraded their WR bodies. No vast improvements anywhere else but at kicker.
If you consider the Browns and Steelers were about the same roster/abilities in 2021, then who would you bet on to have the better 2022 season based on all the offseason moves they’ve made? I think the Steelers are not making a ton of progress for this season, and a rookie QB is unlikely to carry them in 2022. The Browns inched their way better with all their moves overall – a better WR group and possibly a solid QB situation if Watson is his old self and is only out 2-4 games…but that’s a huge ‘if’.
On a neutral field, with these rosters as is, Week 1, everyone healthy and playing – I’d bet on Cleveland’s roster (even considering Watson suspended/not there).
WINNER = Cleveland, who goes on to face Cincinnati in the AFC North finals.
1ST-ROUND RESULTS:
NYG defeats DAL
PHI defeats WSH
LAR defeats SEA
SF defeats ARI
DET defeats GB
MIN defeats CHI
ATL defeats NO
TB defeats CAR
-----------------
NYJ defeats BUF
MIA defeats NE
DEN defeats KC
LAC defeats LV
CIN defeats BAL
CLE defeats PIT

Xavier’s Notes:
Weeks 1-3
It's difficult to draw any conclusions after only three games. But let's look at the teams that won or lost every game…
-- 0-3 teams are ATL, CAR, HOU, JAX, and PIT. The only surprising team is PIT. Who did they play? @CIN, NE, @CLE. Those are three tough games, and so they might still be a decent team.
In fact, CIN and CLE are two of the three teams that went 3-0, along with LAC. Deshaun Watson is not suspended for CLE.
-- Is LAC legitimate? LV, @KC, JAX. The win @KC is impressive, but LAC had a 48% chance of winning the game, and they just happened to win it. And so we shouldn't judge LAC based on one coin flip game.

But for now, here’s what the analysts are seeing…
Ross’s Notes:
--Four 3-0 teams to start, none of them all that surprising…
The Broncos with their newly acquired star QB, the defending champ Rams, and the now healthy Ravens all start 3-0
The Saints are the mild surprise of the group. They have two cupcake games against the Panthers and Falcons and get a nice win over the Bucs, a team they just seem to beat no matter what.
--There are five 0-3 teams and it's exactly who you would expect…
The Jaguars, Falcons, Giants, Texans, and Deshaun Watson-less Browns.
Which of these teams will be able to pick themselves off the trash heap?
--Other notes of interest:
The Lions are feeling good at 2-1, tied for the NFC North lead with the Packers
Unsurprisingly the entire AFC West is 2-1 or better. They may only lose to each other this year
The Panthers start 2-1 with wins over the Giants and Browns sans Watson. This likely won't last

2022 Offseason Assessment Tournament: 1st-Round (CIN v. BAL)

1st-Round Matchup…
CINCINNATI BENGALS
Key Adds:
OG Alex Cappa (FA), OT La’El Collins (FA), OC Ted Karras (FA), TE Hayden Hurst (FA)
DB Dax Hill (pick #31), Cam Taylor-Britt (Pick #60), DL Zach Carter (pick #95), OL Cordell Volson (pick #136)
Key Losses:
TE C.J. Uzomah (FA), DT Larry Ogunjobi (FA?)
vs.
BALTIMORE RAVENS
Key Adds:
SAF Marcus Williams (FA), OT Morgan Moses (FA)
SAF Kyle Hamilton (#14), OL Tyler Linderbaum (pick #25), EDGE David Ojabo (pick #45), DT Travis Jones (pick #76), OL Daniel Faalele (pick #110), TE Charlie Kolar (pick #128), PT Jordan Stout (pick #130), TE Isaiah Likely (pick #139)
Key Losses:
WR Marquise Brown (trade), CB Anthony Averett
The defending Super Bowl losers didn’t take a lot of hits at all this offseason. They’d like to have DT Larry Ogunjobi back, but he’s not irreplaceable. What’s really impressive is that Cincy identified the obvious need/issue, O-Line, and then went out and grabbed three instant starters in free agency. And Hayden Hurst is technically another nice O-Line add at TE. The Bengals assessed the obvious, but then actually executed a plan to solve it. Great job. They didn’t do as well in the draft, but they got some bodies. The O-Line in free agency was the key to this offseason.
The Ravens added a lot of bodies but I’m not sure I love any of them…maybe the punter, Jordan Stout? Travis Jones is hopeful. I like Charlie Kolar but non-Mark Andrews TEs go to die in Baltimore. So many bodies added though…that helps, in general, but does it make an impact? Is there a big-time impact player there if Linderbaum flops? I can’t stand overrated safety Kyle Hamilton. And Ojabo is potentially way overrated.
Do I go with quality (the Bengals filling in three starting OLs) or quantity (the Ravens getting 7+ useful bodies out of the NFL Draft)? I’ll take quality…which is what we’ll remember in the long run. The Bengals added four instant starters to their O-Line (including the TE/Hurst)…the Ravens added 1-2 instant starters, and one of them a punter.
WINNER = Cincinnati, who goes on to the AFC North finals.

Adding Davante Adams is already a big offseason, but they also added Chandler Jones. I’m not sure they didn’t catch Jones at the wrong time/end of his usefulness…actually, I think that’s exactly what happened – overpaying for ‘name’. If that’s true, then all LV really has to show for the 2022 offseason is Davante because their draft was pretty nothing, except Parham is useful/hopeful. They lost good players, but no one ‘wow’ player lost…no one irreplaceable. They are better with the names coming in vs. what they lost…it’s just a lot of names that don’t really matter that much getting sloshed around + they got Davante, which is a ‘+’ offseason.
The Chargers…well, the Chargers killed it in free agency/the offseason. They lost nothing of note while adding a virtual all-star team on defense, plus they got a top O-Lineman out of the draft. The Chargers are one of the favorites to win this entire offseason analysis/tournament.
Easy choice here, the Chargers were already good…but they may have broke ‘great’ (not ‘bad’) with this offseason. The Raiders might be a bit better after all the moves, but we know LAC is WAY better after their moves.
WINNER = Chargers, who go on to face the Denver Broncos in the AFC West finale.

I’m really not in love with the Chiefs’ draft. Some useful players, but not any ‘wow’ players…guys to help keep up with the rapidly improving AFC West. They added a very good Justin Reid, but lost Tyrann Mathieu and Charvarius Ward…so they lost some ground at DB. They added JuJu and MVS at WR, and those two are a pittance of Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs needed to add ammo in their AFC West arms race…they did the opposite.
Denver made the big move to get into the AFC West arms race in 2022. All the Broncos lost was a really promising TE (Fant)…while they added a Hall of Fame QB still in his prime. They also added two DL starters in Gregory and Jones, and two starter-worth CBs in Williams and Callahan. Not to mention adding a few able bodies from the draft.
A huge, fantastic offseason for Denver…with another slow drip slide down from the Chiefs, who have gotten worse every year since their Super Bowl title.
WINNER = Denver, with ease.

2022 Chris Bilello (Bet The Close Podcast) Faux/Computer Simulated Season 1.0 (Weeks 1-3)
The analysts have not seen each other’s simulations…they’ll be seeing them for the first time as the report’s release daily for the next 12 days.
Chris's Notes...
-- PIT 0-3 is a bit surprising but the schedule start is not kind (@CIN, NE, @CLE).

-- PHI (3-0) is a hot team taking bets on season wins “over” with the number being driven up from 8.5 to 9.5…schedule starts nice for it (@DET, MIN, @WAS)
-- ARI (0-3) is a rough prediction for a team that usually starts hot then fades…but (KC, @LV, LAR)

-- 2022 Mock Five Round Dynasty Rookie Draft (from the #4 spot)
-- 2022 Offseason Assessment Tournament: 1st-Round (CIN v. BAL)
**College Football Metrics 2022…new NFL Draft/Dynasty Rookie Draft season coverage sign ups underway**
The new season of CFM will be starting up in January, as always. A little different schedule this year as the NFL extended their season by a week and the Senior Bowl was bumped back a week as well. We should have a Senior Bowl, NFL Combine…it looks like it will be a normal scouting year!
The NFL Draft, Dynasty Rookie Draft, and regular season ahead rookie analysis all gets started through CFM in January with our usual season starter -- the past two years/2020-2021 Mock Rookie Draft re-do, along with in-depth Senior Bowl analysis, and full QB scouting reports and much more as we build towards the NFL Combine and all the other positional scouting reports. Football study never ends…
Thank you for your support of CFM for the past decade now…wow, time flies.

2022 Offseason Assessment Tournament: 1st-Round (CIN v. BAL)

Football study never ends…
Thank you for your support of CFM for the past decade now…wow, time flies.

2022 Offseason Assessment Tournament: 1st-Round (LV v. LAC)

WINNER = Denver, with ease.
