*Pre-editor post (forgive any typos)
The Cardinals scored on their first drive…a drive highlighted by a sweet over-the-shoulder catch by David Johnson for 40-yards. 7-0 Arizona out quickly. The Cardinals then halted the Falcons first drive and got the ball back looking pretty good. But then…
Then a deflected pass pick-six for the Falcons and Atlanta then scored the next 40 points, and it would get so bad that the Cardinals would take out Josh Rosen late in the game to stop him from taking any more hits. Chalk up another embarrassment for soon-to-be one-and-done head coach Steve Wilks.
Arizona should lose out and secure the #1 overall draft pick…nice for the new, incoming head coach and (maybe) GM.
Atlanta stops a five-game skid defeating the NFL’s worst team. Yeah! Atlanta is 5-9 and will finish with 5-6 wins.
Fantasy Player Notes…
-- Here’s how bad the Arizona offense is…
The Atlanta defense sucks…bad. But in this game they registered 7 sacks, 11 QB hits, 12.5 TFLs, and had 2 defensive TDs.
How do you expect David Johnson (11-33-1, 3-68-0/6) to do anything in this offense? Had DJ not made a miracle 3rd-down conversion catch on the first drive, he would have lost that catch from his stats and a short TD a few plays later. DJ was a miracle catch away from just 9 carries, 30, yards, no TDs, 2 catches for 28 yards.
That’s why you can’t trust him over other legit options this week…Jaylen, Damien, Jamaal…
If LeGarrette Blount is inactive, Zach Zenner is likely preferred.
This Arizona coaching hasn’t a clue and no O-Line to help matters. If the #25 run defense (ATL) does this to ARI…what will the #21 Rams run defense do?
When the game gets out of hand…the Cardinals coaches pull back on DJ to save his life. If the Rams run the Cards out of the building…is DJ taking hand-offs in the 4th quarter down 30+?
-- Before you go all insane for Tevin Coleman (11-145-1, 0-0-0/1), note a few things here…
He had rushed for 8.0 carries, 19.7 yards per game his prior 3 games.
He hadn’t had a rushing TD for 6 games prior and had 2 rushing TDs all season before this game.
He had 1 target here…just like last week.
1-1-0 for catches in a game his last 3 games.
He destroyed the #30 run defense (by yards), and #32 in rush TDs allowed (20) in this game.
He might not be a lock to run all over Carolina…because he hasn’t run over anybody pretty much all season.
Note…the last time he did run for 100+ this year was Week 2 vs. CAR.
Ito Smith is done for the year, but Atlanta may want to get Brian Hill (3-7-0) a few touches and run that 70-30 split RBBC thing they love. Hill has been on the roster since Devonta Freeman went out – they need to see what they got here, not more leaving-for-free-agency Tevin Coleman. Not sure what ATL will do for Coleman carry counts this week.
-- Who would benefit if Julio Jones out Week 16, among the ATL WRs?
Calvin Ridley (5-42-0/7) has a decent game every so often and then goes to sleep for several weeks. He scored 6 TDs Weeks 2-4 and has just 2 TDs since (last 9 games). He’s been stuck in a 3-5 catch, 30-50 yards in a game range for a while…a WR3-4 type option.
Mohammed Sanu (3-33-0/6) has been steadier but dull as well…3-4 catches, 40-70 yards in a game, and hasn’t scored a TD in 8 games.
My guess is Sanu because he plays much more snaps than Ridley, normally.
-- Week 16 Outlook…
ATL at Carolina…should be OK. Carolina defense erratic, but so has ATL’s offense been lately. I would treat the ATL weapons as having their normal expectation games here. The Falcons D might be a sleeper vs. Taylor Heinicke, but the Falcons D has been weak all year and debut/unknown QBs have had good/great games in many of their debuts this season.
ARI hosts the Rams in what should be a bloodbath game…especially if Patrick Peterson is inactive. Bad times for everything Cardinals.
