2018 Week 15 Dynasty-Fantasy Analysis: Texans v. Jets

December 17, 2018 1:44 PM
December 17, 2018 7:00 PM

*Pre-editor post (forgive any typos)

The Jets were down 16-9 at the half. Down 16-15 after three quarters. With five minutes left in the game, the Jets found themselves in the lead 22-19…leaping ahead of the muddling Texans surrounded by miserable gray skies; a depressing surrounding that matched Houston’s play all game. That was until Houston raced down the field and scored a TD with 2:15 left to take the lead and then added a late FG to walk away with the 29-22 win…in a game they did not look good in but found a way to win.

I thought my Colts-to-win-the-AFC-South wager (placed after Week 3-4) had a chance again, when the Texans were down late…but it all went up in smoke. Houston needs one more win to secure the AFC South title. They should (but not guaranteed) beat either @PHI or JAX the next two weeks and finish 11-5 and be the #3 seed. Win out, and they can get a #2 seed.

The sad sack Jets should be on a three-game winning streak, but they have found a way to blow two leads late the past 3 weeks. NYJ is 4-10 and on their way to 4-12.

Fantasy Player Notes…

-- Elijah McGuire (18-42-1, 3-29-0/4) drew his first true start of the season. Isaiah Crowell went on I.R. last week and Bilal Powell has been long gone on I.R.

With his chance to impress…McGuire didn’t. A pretty stiff, upright runner…not in a good way. It just felt like he was running to where he was supposed to without a lot of elusiveness or power. He was just mediocre and taking carries.

After a few series, Trenton Cannon (7-13-0, 3-24-0/4) spelled McGuire and I thought he provided more spark and toughness. Mid-game, I thought the Jets might really split more touches between them and they started to…but then wandered back to McGuire.

McGuire will get another game of touches like this Week 16…and likely you’ll hope for the same output – needing that TD to make FF-hay out of him.

Week 16 upside with EMG? Limited.

-- Alfred Blue (9-6-0, 2-9-0/2) may need to be the starter the rest of the season with Lamar Miller (3-8-0) going down early in this game (and helping me sneak by some FF playoff games with his bad fortune to offset whatever issues my roster had going on).

Bill O’Brien seems more than comfortable with Blue any time he’s needed, and he looks better than Lamar, to me, every time he gets the chance to…but O’Brien is lock and chain in love with Miller for some reason. I can’t fault him…he’s about to win the AFC South for three of the past 4 seasons.

D’Onta Foreman will invoke a lot of chatter and scuttlebutt this week, and it makes sense because they should get him ready for the playoffs as a possible ‘pop’ player…but if I know the NFL, they will do the opposite. Blue will get 99% of the touches. Something about ‘knowing the blocking schemes’ or something.

None of us really knows how ready Foreman is anyway after the usual NFL-killer Achilles tear. The smart Week 16 bet is on Blue.

The Texans could go with their beloved Buddy Howell for some surprise touches as well.

-- Are you kidding me with Ka’imi Fairbairn (5/5 FG, 2/2 XP)? The guy had no FG attempts the game prior and then 5-for-5 this week, and I own no shares of him but in this depressed FF scoring week…he got some people over on me.

Fairbairn has gone 5/5 on FGs in two of his last 3 games…with 0/0 wedged in-between.

-- Fantasy Week 16 outlook…

The Texans go to cold Philly, after flopping around on offense in colder/wet New York this past week. If not for two big catch & run plays by WRs…it would have been ugly for Watson/the passing game. May not be a treat this week in Philly with a motivated Eagles team. The Texans-DST is nothing great vs. Foles either.

The Jets are at home again Week 16 vs. GB…a ‘who cares’ game. The Packers defense has gotten better and better and should crush the Jets’ potential output. Nothing to like about the Jets this week.
