2018 Week 2 Dynasty-Fantasy Analysis: Chargers v. Bills

September 22, 2018 3:05 PM
September 22, 2018 4:06 PM

*Pre-editor post (forgive any typos)

So, this was a game that happened…

The Chargers jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, then a 28-6 lead by halftime, and then they put a lot of backup players in and tried to wind down the clock to an easy victory over Buffalo (and ‘mission accomplished’). The Bills kept grinding in the second half trying to keep up appearances, and the game mercifully ended on a last second Bills TD to make it 31-20, but this game was absolutely never in doubt.

The Bills laid down tape to try to make the case that they are the worst team in the NFL. It’s close between them and Arizona, but I have to give the nod to the Bills…as the Cards are about to deploy a rookie QB who can actually play.

I guess you have to lean Bills as ‘the worst’ for the simple reason – any time your team is so bad that a player (Vontae Davis) retires at halftime, that’s a pretty impressive case for the academy voting for ‘worst team in the NFL’. Hard to top that effort.

Fantasy Player Notes…

-- What do you want me to say on Josh Allen (18-33 for 245 yards, 1 TD/2 INTs)? I tried to warn you. All the FFM NFL Draft scouts, save one, tried to warn you all pre-Draft and at the draft. I know, Bills’ fans, ‘it’s too early’…go ahead and keep the faith if you want.

To everyone else, I just watched the Josh Allen I have witnessed in every game I’ve ever seen him in. Inaccurate, cannot properly gauge the speed at which he should throw the ball, 1-2 passes that make you drool, two picks, but about 2-3-4 more picks that were possible. Nothing I’ve seen from him in college, the preseason, or 1.5 regular season games leads me to believe anything will ever change here.

For me, I don’t have to apply a ‘patience’ label or ‘wait and see’…I know what I saw/have seen. I know what our computer scouting models saw right away. Everything points to the same problem – great arm, cannot play the QB position with the skill needed at the highest level. It’s that simple.

It’s not complicated but the NFL falls for this every time. And they will again the next time.

-- Looks like LeSean McCoy (9-39-04-29-0/4) is going to try to play this week. If he doesn’t, I’m for Marcus Murphy (3-6-0, 1-7-0/5), but honestly…who knows…and ‘who cares?’. The Vikings are going to wipe out this run game and the Bills will be lucky to score 10 points. If I’m desperate, and McCoy is ruled out – Murphy is my choice with mild conviction.

-- I’m going to say it…

Yep, and once I say it…I guarantee 100% that nothing will ever come of it. But I’m going to say it because it’s an annual ritual of self-mutilation I like to do before the tight end gods each season.

You know who looks good – Virgil Green (3-55-0/3). Now, I realize, I’m 0-fer-like 7-8 seasons on this but it just means ‘I’m due’. However, man did Green and Rivers have a little connection going on – simple passes like he used to do to Antonio Gates (no stats), and Green is so good after the catch. Man, do I love Green and would like to spit on the NFL for not one team realizing what a TE weapon he could have been.

Maybe the Chargers will stumble into it (hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha)?

I’m just saying…

Green is a super talent.

Gates is out for Week 3.

Remember how Jared Cook tore the Rams a new one Week 1?

You’re a fool if you even pay one second of attention to any of my Virgil Green talk…ever.

But, if he could just…

I’m never rewarded on Virgil. Lonely Virgil.

-- Austin Ekeler (11-77-0, 3-21-0/3) is the #9 PPG scorer in PPR among all RBs so far this season. I think Ekeler is a solid RB3/flex from time-to-time but consider – the Chargers got crushed by KC and then LAC crushed the Bills. Game plans changed, backups got more touches, etc.

-- Rookie WR Robert Foster (2-30-0/7) got elevated to #4 WR with Jeremy Kerley getting cut this past week. I’m not seeing anything special besides ‘fast’, and no WR is really going to matter on the Bills in 2018 anyway.
