2019 Dynasty/Fantasy Football Analysis: Week 14 – Chargers 45, Jaguars 10

2019 Dynasty/Fantasy Football Analysis: Week 14 – Chargers 45, Jaguars 10

This was an embarrassment.

I mean, the Jaguars…good Lord…unbelievable. Unbelievable how bad this team is. I don’t expect them to win games at this stage, but at least try would be nice? This is the textbook example of a team quitting on their coach…not only their coach but the whole organization (because of the lack of faith or concern for the coach or the GM).

Look, I don’t know what the Jaguars will do from here for 2020…but it better be a clean sweep. Doug Marrone is an obvious fire. He’ll never be an NFL head coach again, and he knows it. He’ll retire with his millions, I assume…or go coach college somewhere. He’s mailing it in the rest of the way. Tom Coughlin is the real loser here. This team Coughlin has constructed is an embarrassment. The coach has quit on the players and vice-versa. Jalen Ramsey, their ace/franchise player…gone. Their highest paid player, Nick Foles – a waste of money now. Their ‘name’ player remaining, Leonard Fournette…he needs to be traded because it’s a waste to invest in a running back when you’re rebuilding. Coughlin should be held accountable for this mess more than Marrone.

Will Coughlin be fired? I have no idea. The Jaguars personnel group all needs to go along with VP David Caldwell, who authored all of this.

I can’t even talk about this game…there’s nothing to talk about. It’s like the Jags weren’t even there. It started out Jags 3-0 and was 24-3 LAC by the half and then the Jaguars came out of halftime and gave up an 84-yard TD to go down 31-3. They aren’t even pretending to try, they barely try to make a tackle most plays. They’ve lost their last five games by a combined score of 193 to 57.

I may have picked the Jaguars the last five weeks in my general ATS picks, just assuming a snapback game…but the Jaguars are not capable of it. I picked them again this week on the early ‘all game picks ATS’ just as a ‘take the points with two bad teams’ play vs. Oakland. I’ll be switching that in reality to the Raiders and may even bet on it after what I saw here. This was remarkably bad. Probably the worst effort in a game I sensed all season by any team…and it competes with the Jaguars last 1-2 games.

The Jaguars should not win a game the rest of the year and they will end up 4-12.

The Chargers just showed up and were handed a gift, and they took it. The Chargers are 5-8, probably on their way to 6-10.

Fantasy Player Notes…

 -- I’m a Gardner Minshew (24-37 for 162 yards, 1 TD/1 INT) guy but he cannot overcome this mess. Since he’s been back…147 and 162 yards in his two games. 2 TDs/1 INT total in two games.

He’s doing all he can, but he just lost his ace WR to injury and the other WRs have no real urgency, except for one (which we’ll discuss in a moment). With no O-Line and everyone checking out…you’d hope there would be some garbage time, but opponents are just dominating everything against them, and the Jags have no answers even against prevent defense.

I know Minshew is facing the Raiders Week 15, and they have the worst secondary aside from Arizona…but they are trying. They have some talent. The Raiders are still playing hard. Not Jacksonville. I’d have to be desperate to pull the Minshew play Week 15, but if he were going to have a big game because he doesn’t care and just guns it all over the place…this would be the week, against Oakland.

 -- With D.J. Chark (9-75-0/10) gone, and what a helluva year he had, who will Minshew go to?

Dede Westbrook (6-25-0/7) by default…the easy short pass underneath the prevent zone. So, expect a game like this…lots of catches and not much action from it – maybe, 6-10 catches for 30-60 yards and hope for a junk TD versus Oakland.

Chris Conley (1-7-0/3) has never been a desire of Minshew, and Conley has nothing to prove/he’s been paid. He’s a non-factor.

Keelan Cole (1-12-0/3) is the one WR who is playing for his future here, and he has talent. There might be a nice relationship here as Cole shocks by becoming Minshew’s go-to a la Chark…but Cole is differently talented than Chark.

If you are desperate…Cole for a big game out of nowhere is possible, given the Raiders’ secondary.

2020 College Football Metrics Season Coming Soon

It’s almost time…

Time to start the studies, scouting, grading, ranking of the 2020 NFL Draft/Dynasty Rookie Draft class. CFM, as always, will have scouting reports on all the top prospects and small-school sleepers and everything in-between as we grade/rank over 600+ prospects by draft day. We’ll cover the East-West Shrine, Senior Bowl, NFL Combine, and NFL Draft along the way and build to our weekly Top 200+ Dynasty Rookie Draft rankings (including IDPs).

We’ll also look back at the 2019 NFL Draft and 2019 Dynasty Rookie Draft rankings and re-do the 2019 Rookie Draft to see where we’re at and what items undervalued (now) to target in 2020. So much scouting to do – the Dynasty/Fantasy studies never end and are constantly fluid. It all starts again in early-mid January 2020.

More details and specific launch date as we get closer to the end of the 2019 regular season.

 -- The Chargers backfield since Gordon began starting (after his holdout, in Week 5)…

PPR and non-PPR rankings in PPG among RBs:

#7 PPR, #13 non-PPR PPG = Austin Ekeler

#19 PPR, #16 non-PPR PPG = Melvin Gordon

 -- College LB/SAF, NFL Draft prospect safety, Drue Tranquill (8 tackles) is now starting at inside linebacker for the Chargers? I would have never guessed him to wind up at that position.

He’s been starting the last three games, and has averaged 8.0 tackles, 1.0 TFLs per game. Not bad for IDP.

 -- On the other side, the Jaguars have lost multiple linebackers throughout the season and are at the bottom of the depth chart with Donald Payne (15 tackles) -- he’s started the last two weeks and had 13 and 15 tackles in the two game. So many plays running AT the Jags lately -- the tackle count opportunities are awesome.

Side note…watching Payne play here – he looks terrible to me. He looks like a bad 4-3 OLB/pass rusher trying to play ILB. Stiff. Thick. If you wondered why opponents are crushing the Jaguars in the run game…here you go.

Snap Counts of Interest:

58 = Chark

57 = Conley

44 = Westbrook

34 = Keelan Cole

29 = Ekeler

29 = M Gordon

12 = Justin Jackson
