2020: Dynasty/Fantasy Preseason News, Observations, Rumors (9/8/2020)

Every few days in August on FFM, per usual, I’m going to share some observations from the latest football news and share any rumors/interesting conversations I’m coming across. I have to work the phonelines heavy this August to get info because open practices, preseason games, freedom of the press is severely limited/eliminated this virus year.

In no particular order, and the items I found most interesting…

-- D’Andre Swift listed 4th on the Lions’ depth chart today?!? Wow. Message rec’d.

Swift is either hurt or being punished for missing camp time, and either way that ‘message’ + Adrian Peterson signed means the Swift ‘hopes’ are going to materialize later into the season and he’s not worth where he is being drafted at this very moment in redraft.

-- Kareem Hunt signs a contract extension with the Browns…unreal.

Hunt is settling for good money today from a sucker organization instead of trying to go for the big bucks in free agency next year  (which might be smart considering the economic environment/outlook) – which means his Dynasty value drops dramatically.

Hunt will be a useful PPR entity and Chubb handcuff for the next couple of years

Nick Chubb’s value is not helped by this either. His Dynasty value sinks.

-- Mike Tomlin professed his love for James Conner as his bell cow in the news today.

There are two things you can count on: (1) Tomlin’s love for Conner, and (2) Pete Carroll’s love for Chris Carson.

Reason and options will not matter to these coaches…in the moment…in their minds/hearts. But then reality tends to strike and change things in-season. Not willingly or easily.

Now, note about Conner…

1) That Tomlin statement is as good as the moment…blowing in the wind. If things go sideways, this situation will change. Last week, Bruce Arians said Ronald Jones is the lead dog starter and Leonard Fournette will have to work his way into things…this week he’s telling us Fournette will have a major role Week 1.

Things change. Sometimes you say things you have to or believe…at the moment, but then things change.

Conner is their starter – and you ‘talk them up’. I’m sure Tomlin believes Conner is the unquestioned starter/bell cow. But if Conner fumbles/struggles (as he does)…things change fast for a team not been in the playoffs in a few years. Tomlin’s words are true right now…for what they are worth.

2) Conner has not been signed to any extension, etc., because he will not be a Steeler in 2021. That’s how much they love him. I mean…they do like him, he’s just not economically or performance-wise worth it. And the Steelers are smart where others are dumb on these types of things…usually.

3) Conner has rushed for over 65 yards in a game just once in his last 15 NFL games. Let that sink in.

In his last 16-games, an NFL season, Conner has rushed for 838 yards and 7 TDs. He has caught 58 passes in that span (3.6 per game).

204 carries in that span…4.1 ypc…two games over 16 carries.

Have you asked yourself -- What Tomlin’s definition of a bell cow is anyway?

-- J.D. McKissic starting? He’s listed that way. Why no ‘Antonio Gibson fantasy hype’ for him in the fantasy universe?

I think the message of Peyton Barber listed as 3rd-string is a STRONG message that he’s not valued, and that, in fact, the intention of Washington is to split McKissic/Gibson. It’s good news for any wondering that Gibson is just a few touches a game guy Week 1 (as I have strongly thought). It’s likely Gibson is going to get a decent chance at Week 1 touches, but if he flops…he’ll get a hook and Barber will have to roll in as the heavy/power back (because McKissic is not that).

McKissic is not a legit Austin Ekeler, Christian McCaffrey type RB transformation – he’s a kinda/sorta WR converted to RB in the pros (was an RB converted to WR in college). But McKissic may get a chance to be an Ekeler/McKissic whether it makes sense or not…because this is the backfield they FC’s chose.

Stock way up for McKissic on the news…and it might be a temp blip, but JDMK might be more promising for Week 1 than an RB flyer shot on James Robinson/Ozigbo or Cordarrelle/Nall.

-- All our Video Q&As are on demand after the show closes. You can listen to them all or skip around on them...or just listen to the first 10-15 minutes for my show intro of FF news to catch some key things happening -- including the Handicapping show last night...the first 10 minutes was on James Robinson and Antonio Gibson.
