2021 Dynasty/Fantasy Preseason Wk1 Game Analysis: Bears 20, Dolphins 13 (Subscriber Extra Notes)
So, I’m watching/scouting this game to see Tua and Fields…and then Bears rookie ILB prospect UDFA out of Houston Baptist Caleb Johnson walks into my life/heart.
I’m watching the game and I see this dude #92 (Caleb Johnson) running with Salvon Ahmed on a wheel route sprinting downfield – and #92 gets burned, but I’m thinking -- who is that DE-looking monster somewhat keeping up with Ahmed in sprint coverage? I mean…look at that body, and his fluidity moving at that size – who is that? I quickly learned it was Caleb Johnson, who would go on to have 5 tackles, 2 TFLs, and a PD in the game…as an ILB. That’s one big ILB…he looks like a 250+ pound edge rusher, sculpted. See what I mean at the play at 4:08 (should open right to it) – just look at the body: https://youtu.be/4nj54DycagA?t=248
In college, Johnson averaged 9.2 tackles per game in 2018, 10.4 tackles per game in 2019…and was co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Southland Conference with 12.2 tackles per game in 2020 – double-digit tackles each game. He was a captain of the team, an honor roll academic, and a leadership award winner in college.
He then posted a later-in-the-process (4/8/21) Pro Day of…
4.73 40-time, 6.89 three-cone, 19 bench reps, 38” vertical
It looks like he’s added 10-20+ pounds of muscle since April…he looks like a monster. He kinda plays like one too. Check out his college tape: https://youtu.be/E8f-54i8uJk
I didn’t have scouting grades on him because he was so below the radar, his Pro Day was late in the process, and I never got the data on it from any source. But I have it now. You can tell from college he’s a middle linebacker mindset…and now he’s bigger/more muscular for the pros. He made some nice plays in this game – stood out to me right away.
He might not see much action in 2021, but he might get up to 2nd-team in short order…and then be something for 2022+ (with the new Bears coaches, whoever they will be).
