2021 Dynasty/Fantasy Preseason Wk1 Game Analysis: Ravens 17, Saints 14 (Subscriber Extra Notes)…
Ross Jacobs published his game analysis of the BAL-NO game. I watched it as well and am giving my extra two cents here …
-- As Ross Jacobs wrote about, this is Taysom Hill definitely starting for the Saints in 2021 and it isn’t even close. It’s not a competition like Lock v. Teddy or Lance v. Jimmy G. or Mac v. Cam is. Taysom has been acting as the starter all along and was with the 1s here like a starter and Winston was clearly with the 2s.
But in case you STILL did not believe Taysom was starting, all you had to do is watch this game and see the difference between the two QB’s play here. Taysom is good and Winston still blows.
I was 90% sure Taysom was starting before this game (allowing 10% for NFL lunacy and the media pressure), but now I’m 99% sure Taysom is starting at QB. He’s been treated like the #1 all along.
-- Marquez Callaway is the #1 WR for this team. And go look at the Michael Thomas numbers with Taysom last season. You want in on this for the price.
-- Ross Jacobs did an excellent job discussing/introducing the Saints RB Tony Jones Jr. situation/uprising. He’s still a #4 RB for this squad. A possible Dynasty lottery ticket. Latavius Murray is getting old and creates some cap space if they cut him. Devonta Freeman is old, period. Tony Jones isn’t far away from having a shot at a #2 back opportunity…but several dominoes need to fall and he’s still young and played well against the Ravens 2nd-team or worse defense. Let’s slow down a bit on getting too excited here, he’s just good/interesting/OK not ‘wow -- but Jones did catch my attention in this game because everyone else was getting stuffed until Jones entered.

-- Ravens RB Ty’Son Williams was the other back that played well in this game, while most RBs failed in this game – but he is further buried on the Ravens depth chart and he didn’t look as good as Jones. Dynasty squatting of the two, go Tony Jones Jr.
-- Juwan Johnson is now a TE for the Saints and he had a couple nice catch and runs in his TE debut. He’s a very ‘lost’/inexperienced-looking but viable receiving TE prospect right now. He’s not as polished (and never will be) a TE-convert as Tyree Jackson is already, or as Jordan Matthews is in that former-WR-turned-TE role.
Johnson is worth monitoring but he’s not a dominant force of a receiver/player so he will probably not much more than a useful receiving TE body from time-to-time.
-- The legit WR in lower depth chart ranks from this game – Ravens 2nd-year WR Jaylon Moore. He’s like a Marquez Callaway in waiting. He too is buried under a deep (with names) Ravens WR group. I’d say keep an eye on him, but he has a mountain of WRs to climb past AND then he gets to be in a WR rotation with Lamar Jackson throwing – not a great path for FF purposes.
However, if the Ravens try to sneak him onto the practice squad and he’s plucked by a team/good situation – then we can get Dynasty excited.
…but that would require GMs and scouts actually studying these preseason games and knowing talent when they see it – and we all know that’s an 0-fer-2 proposition on them doing their jobs. Moore will be unfairly buried for years, sadly…while Sammy Watkins is shoved millions of more dollars to suck every week.
