R.C. Quick Notes on: Lance/JG, BRob-Gibson, Laviska and Saints TEs

R.C. Quick Notes on: Lance/JG, BRob-Gibson, Laviska and Saints TEs

-- Jimmy Garoppolo re-signing with the 49ers is an FF game changer on Trey Lance.

I believe the 49ers thinking is: Jimmy G. is a great mentor and backup for Lance. It’s smart, but we all know what’s likely to happen -- it will become that anytime Lance does something wrong or they lose a game, then everyone will clamor for Garoppolo as if he’s some savior. It’s a lot of pressure on a young, inexperienced QB.

I think JG is looking at this ride as ‘free money’ to hold a clipboard and be a quasi-coach this year…but there will be a lot of pressure to push JG in after any loss or bad game by Lance. Or if Lance gets hurt and JG comes in, and then if the 49ers start winning strong with JG…how do you take him out when Lance is back?

I still like Lance as my 2nd QB in 4pts per pass TD Fantasy. NOT my #1. And I like it a whole lot less than I did 24 hours ago.

Lance may break out through this as JG gets a paid vacation as a backup going safely into free agency 2023. If JG takes down Lance at some point, then I move on to some other QB. I don’t have to have Lance as my #2 QB for FF, there’s other options, but for the now-declining price it’s even cheaper to have him as the 2nd QB look-and-see.

It’s not like Garoppolo is some force of nature. No one liked him before, but now he’s a savior who is gonna bump off Lance? I mean, maybe…it’s more likely now than it was 24 hours ago.

If you want to bypass all the Lance drama and go elsewhere for a #2 QB for your FF team, go for it. If you want to see how this plays out -- it makes sense. He’s a sudden ‘buy lower’ for Dynasty gambles.

-- Brian Robinson getting shot is the epitome of Fantasy Football. Some people had just drafted him the night before or the day of, in redrafts. You gotta love Fantasy…never a dull moment.

But the news hit, and then everyone instantly wanted to proclaim Antonio Gibson the new savior of Fantasy Football. I get it, but I don’t think it is true.

The Antonio Gibson problem is not ‘Brian Robinson is better’ -- the problem is Gibson has lost favor with the Washington staff before all this. Fumble issues on top of whatever else -- Gibson IS the problem. Washington tried to solve it with Brian Robinson, so now they’ll try and solve it with J.D. McKissic on the field more and Jaret Patterson being ready (like last year when Patterson started moving in on Gibson).

It’s better for Gibson that BRob is gone for a while, but the real ‘problem’ still remains. Gibson is not magically fixed now. He’s still the split role RB on a bad offense with a dying QB, weak O-Line, and a staff not behind him/in his corner. Maybe Gibson takes the opportunity and runs with it…but it’s not a guarantee, at all. This problem started before Brian Robinson ever showed up. When BRob returns…it could be the end of Gibson for FF starting.

-- Laviska Shenault being acquired by Carolina just shows how sad the Panthers have become. That team has no life. The coach has lost the team. There’s no juice here and Shenault is meaningless into the mix…if anything, it slices a bit more off D.J. Moore, who I am starting to go back to FF-hating again. Never loved him in Carolina…thought Baker might be a good thing but watching this team this preseason -- I’m not so sure. I’m just running from Carolina things, except I’m sure CMC will get the ball all the time if healthy.

-- Juwan Johnson, Saints TE, is getting my attention. He’s really working a lot of snaps with and ahead of Adam Trautman. Johnson had a good run with Jameis Winston last season, before Winston got hurt and was gone.

I think Juwan Johnson is moving into place as a TE2 with sleeper TE1 hopes, especially in non-PPR. Not a top-level TE star…just someone in that #8-18 TE mix, who is a TD away from being a TE1 for the week…or a no-TD game away from being a TE3 for the week.

Jody Fortson and Juwan Johnson are getting my attention in similar ways -- not the full, starting TE but plays a lot of snaps and has a size and connection with the QB to lead to FF output even on 50% snap counts.
