‘Preview’ scouting reports are when I take a look at a small amount of tape and overall output data we have on a non-QB prospect before the NFL Combine and complete a preview report on what I’m seeing before I do a larger scouting study after the NFL Combine or Pro Days. Our computer scouting models cannot function properly without the NFL Combine and/or Pro Day data, so I’m not committing to these scouting reports being my definitive word on the prospect. Using what we have, I wanted to take a glimpse at some of the bigger names to share what I see initially.
This is my quick-take on players from watching a few minutes of game film and looking over their college production numbers in our computer scouting models. I don’t have the measurables and I’m not watching several games and getting in-depth. This is just quick hit scouting to have some context for watching the college all-star bowls.
East-West Shrine Bowl CBs (in no particular order)…
WEST CB Fabian Moreau, UCLA (6′0″/205)
— Best season (2014): 53 tackles, 1 INT, 8 PD (13 games)
Quick tape: Solid cover corner. Teams tended to stay away from him…a good sign.
WEST CB Ashton Lampkin, Oklahoma State (6′1″/195)
— Best season (2015): 31 tackles, 1 INT, 5 PDs (12 games)
Quick tape: Decent cover skills. Poor tackler. So-so instincts on the field. Is out of position a few too many times in my brief sampling of tape.
WEST CB Treston Decoud, Oregon State (6′3″/208)
— Best season (2016): 58 tackles, 2 INTs, 10 PDs (12 games)
Quick tape: Good effort, but so-so in coverage and as a tackler. Does a good job knocking the ball away from WRs, but it also means WRs are getting open and catching the ball on him.
WEST CB Aarion Penton, Missouri (5′10″/195)
— Best season (2016): 43 tackles, 5 INTs (1 TD), 12 PDs (12 games)
Quick tape: Better-than-average athlete. Quick first step, quick decision-making, sure tackler. Plays more like a safety than a corner.
WEST CB Tyquwan Glass, Fresno State (5′11″/194)
— Best season (2015): 62 tackles, 4 INTs, 6 PDs (12 games)
Quick tape: Very good football player. Tough, physical cover corner with great hands to catch potential INTs. Tackles like a safety but has corner cover skills. I didn’t see star potential, per se, but definitely has a place in the NFL. Depends upon his measurables. He’s a player for sure.
