Camp Notes, of interest to me, that I’ve seen from bootleg tape or heard from my ‘secret’ sources (no particular order):
OK, I was sent a report with the Cowboys alignments in 11-on-11 drills the last two days. Here are some ‘by the numbers’ of interest…
*NOTE: 35 alignments charted.
-- TE = Geoff Swaim in on 30 of 35 alignments, Blake Jarwin 18. Two TE set 13 times.
Swaim is starting because this offense is built to block for Elliott. Jarwin is the pass catcher for sure.
-- WRs (and Allen Hurns had a whole day off in this)…
23 of 35 alignments Tavon Austin
14 Michael Gallup
12 T. Williams
Tavon Austin feels like a focal point of the passing game, with it being spread around a lot…and most of the love has been reported concerning how good Austin has looked.
Michael Gallup is coming on strong and is starting to look like the most talented guy they have, but not ‘ready’ yet.
-- Byron Jones, by all accounts, is killing it as a CB.
Imagine the Super Bowl Dallas would have won last season had they started Byron Jones as a CB from day-one and drafted Jalen Ramsey instead of Ezekiel Elliott.
But, Ezekiel Elliott jumped in that Salvation Army bucket that one time and it was hilarious…
-- Speaking of Elliott…Rod Smith was in on 2 alignments of 35 charted. Otherwise it’s all Zeke.
-- It’s Dallas Goedert-mania in Philly (while Dallas rotates Geoff Swaim and Blake Jarwin). Only Tarik Cohen has more reports of TDs scored in drills.
1) The Goedert uprising has to have deleterious effect on Zach Ertz’s numbers for 2018…even if a 10% decline.
2) Goedert is beating defenders repeatedly…including ace pass cover linebacker Jordan Hicks. He’s not just abusing 3rd-teamers.
-- Josh Adams is back practicing but I’ve not seen nor heard anything on him of late besides “He’s huge!”
-- Albert Wilson is starting to get more reps with the 1st-team, but more as a rotating in and out with the other starters…a 4-man rotation like a WRBC (wide receiver by committee approach).
-- I’ve heard nothing but glowing reports on CB Xavien Howard, but we have to keep in mind he’s working against bottom tier QBs and WRs. Miami has the 2nd-worst WR group in the NFL off the top of my head (Bills the worst).
-- Speaking of Miami and defense, this could be a sleeper DST in golden matchups. This is a young talented group but not sure they’ll get much help from the offense.
-- Levine Toilolo is getting the most buzz at TE for Detroit with Luke Willson seeming like the starter. Michael Roberts is not practicing of late for injury reasons (unknown to me).
I’ve not heard anyone tell me Willson is standing out in camp. He’s not doing anything bad but doesn’t seem like he’s seizing the moment.
-- Every note I get on Kerryon Johnson is him underwhelming and get halted in his tracks in run game drills and one-on-one action. Not a surprise because he’s a very high probably bust for lack of NFL talent.
-- Watching Courtland Sutton in Denver camp, all I can say is ‘wow’.
-- DeAngelo Henderson starting to make waves. Phillip Lindsay is forcing his way onto the roster…and maybe the starting lineup. The Devontae Booker cut/traded watch is on.
FFM and CFM ahead…
-- BAL-CHI preview this afternoon, and how to bet it.
-- BAL-CHI recap (I’m so excited) tomorrow afternoon.
-- 2019 CB prospect preview posting later today on CFM, and we have another ‘A’ grade preview. This coming draft feels a lot better than the 2018 one, as a gut reaction to the previews. More ‘A’ player potential in 2019.
-- Next Draft Guide update Friday midday.
