2018 Dynasty-Fantasy Training Camp Notes 8/7/18 Tuesday

August 7, 2018 6:31 PM

*Quick notes, moving fast on them...forgive any typos*

Tuesday Notes…

**One set of notes TUE-WED-THU before we go full tilt, all day with notes and game recaps, etc, with the blizzard of activity from the preseason games upon us.**

NFC (AFC tomorrow morning) Camp Notes, of interest to me, that I’ve seen from bootleg tape or heard from my ‘secret’ sources (no particular order):

-- Equanimeous St. Brown has taken the big step forward in the rookie-trio battle for the Packers in 2018. ESB was the star of Pack’s recent family night/scrimmage. J’Mon Moore did what he usually does…has a neat play/catch and then disappears for stretches. Marquez Valdes-Scantling did what he does – up and down; didn’t standout but looks fast.

-- Notes from the Packers’ depth chart release…

Phillip Yancey was ahead of Valdes-Scantling.

Brett Hundley ahead of the total disaster that is DeShone Kizer. Even the media is like ‘why did we trade for this guy?’ Don’t forget – Kizer was most of the analyst’s and the media’s top QB prospect last year.

RBs: Jamaal Williams #1, Ty Montgomery #2, Aaron Jones #3

Rookie Oren Burks is the starting ILB next to Blake Martinez.

-- Tavon Austin has been quite the talk of camp as the best WR…I think that means he’s the most visible. He’s made for looking good in scrimmages. Regardless, he’s getting a lot of looks/touches/targets and now he starting to lineup in the backfield. He took his first handoffs as a tailback the last two practices.

-- Everyone is raving about 2016 UDFA DT Antwaun Woods (USC). He played a game for TEN in 2016. No games registered in 2017. Now, one of the talks of Dallas camp in 2018. I need to see what this is all about when Dallas hits the field Thursday. He’s not been on my radar.

 -- RB depth chart release…

Blount/Riddick with Kerryon Johnson 2nd-team and then buried in the back are Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington 3rd-team.

For what it is worth, a couple Lions’ practice observers have told me how good Zenner-Washington look when they get a chance, but they barely get the work the other guys do.

Every interview I see/hear with Lions players, they gush about LeGarrette Blount with Theo Riddick…or about how they have 3-4-5 differently talented guys and how great it is. Every time I see/hear the beat writers take on the RBs it’s all Kerryon Johnson.

I’ll leave it up to you on which group has the agenda or pulse better…

-- Carson Wentz has now not been in 11-on-11 (contact) drills for eight straight practices. It’s smart to keep him safe, but there is still worry that he will not be ready Week 1. He had a pretty serious injury and it was late in the season. No guarantee he’s ready…he may even go on PUP??

-- Dallas Goedert is now in the Hall of Fame. Of all the names of players I’ve heard people raving about in training camps around the league, Goedert is the winner. My top 3 camp MVPs of most hype…

1) Goedert

2) Courtland Sutton

3) Tarik Cohen

-- Nick Foles singled out 2nd-year WR Rashard Davis (UDFA/James Madison) as a player to watch out for. Odd, intriguing because Foles isn’t one to shoot his mouth off without reason.

Davis is 5’8”/173, a 4.47 40-time, 6.90 three-cone, 4.05 shuttle. In 2016, if I have it right, he returned 9 punts…3 for TDs. His first two returns of the season were 70+ yard TDs. The 2016 CAA Player of the Year. Just 31-345-2 as a WR in 2016, so…there’s that.

 -- RB depth chart…

Yes, Rob Kelley is #1 for right now. Derrius Guice #5. Pretty sure that’s not real…

My biggest takeaway was Chris Thompson and then Kapri Bibbs both ahead of Samaje Perine. I pray to the heavens Perine gets moved on to another team. We’ll have two major RB injuries in the next three weeks around the league, you’d think…so, Perine can potentially find a new home.

-- Quinton Dunbar is listed as a #1 CB with Josh Norman, which is great for that guy. He deserves it.

-- DE Matt Ioannidis listed as a starter over Anthony Lanier was a mild surprise.

 -- Depth chart notes…

O.J. Howard and Cam Brate both listed as starters

The RBs: Barber, then Jacquizz, then Ron Jones/Charles Sims as a split #3s

Justin Watson near the very end of the WR depth chart (setting up a hide to put on practice squad).

 -- Depth chart notes…

Shane Vereen listed behind Mark IngramTerrance West and Boston Scott are at the end of the depth chart. No veteran love for West, but Vereen prominent. I think that says something about Weeks 1-4?

Tom Savage ahead of Taysom Hill, and that’s a surprise for me.

-- Allen Robinson is now working full tilt and it seems like he’s the obvious #1 WR and leader of this group.

-- In my top 3 ‘most love’ from training camp, I should have put WR Anthony Miller. Again, I don’t see it and I’m straining to look for/find it.

I hope I’ll be able to tell after Week 1 of the preseason. SO many people are on this bullet train, I’m starting to feel like I got left behind. Only…I’m almost always right, so there’s that tugging at me. We’ll see…

-- A big push going on from rookie OL James Daniels to become the starting Center. He’s getting rave reviews on his Center work. He’s very talented and will be a huge help for Trubisky-Howard long-term.

-- More reasons to love Mitch Trubisky, who is suddenly getting a hype train going by his stellar play in practices running the offense with all his weapons now with him. Check this out (Link):

-- Depth chart notes…

Chad Williams ahead of Christian Kirk, not a surprise but a surprise.

Chase Edmonds at #2 already…he’s definitely the DJ ‘handcuff’.

Ricky Seals-Jones #1 TE…but Jermaine Gresham is hurt/not listed active is why.

Robert Nkemdiche a starter? Might be to bump his trade value.

-- The Cards lost starting center A.Q. Shipley…not good for Bradford or DJ.

One Liners…

-- Pete Carroll thinks Doug Baldwin SHOULD be ready Week 1. I still think there’s risk he isn’t and that the issue is more concerning than being let on…but that’s speculation.

-- Samson Ebukam a starter at OLB for the Rams per depth chart. All I hear is how good he’s been in camp.

-- Carolina may be at risk of losing another OL starter to injury – Amini Silatolu carted off. Darryl Williams already lost. A top starter lost in free agency. Not good for this already bad run game (look at the YPC minus Cam).
