*Quick notes, moving fast on them...forgive any typos*
Camp Notes, of interest to me, that I’ve seen from bootleg tape or heard from my ‘secret’ sources (no particular order):
All random one liners below as we get ready for the game tonight. Later today, pre-kickoff I’ll have my ‘What I’m watching and how to bet it’ guide to the evening.
-- I watched that Larry Fitzgerald interview on NFL Network (on Arizona night, apparently)…he talked about the adjustment he’s having to make to a head coach so committed to the run. Almost like he was disappointed.
Later, I watched the David Johnson interview. He went out of his way to talk about how run-oriented the new coach is…and how he loves it.
Kurt Warner asked questions of Bradford-Rosen, slipping in ‘now, we know this is the best O-Line here in years…’ as a set up to a question. Injured OL/guys are back. Changes were made in the offseason. The starting center out is a killer…and I know Warner is a Cardinals hype man, but that was a pretty bold statement.
David Johnson talked about how great the O-Line has been (as he should) during camp.
In the 11-on-11 they displayed on the Network all night…a lot of #31 running the ball.
I think Arizona is going to run a lot. Steve Wilks isn’t lying. The player’s are parroting the message.
-- LB Nate Gerry is listed as a starter at OLB for the Eagles, as has been suspected all along. It’s of mild IDP interest because Gerry was a safety by trade in college…a 4.58 runner at his Combine (2017). He’s an average speed safety, but a fast linebacker.
-- The NFL Network asked Larry Fitzgerald how all the new WRs were fitting in, etc. and Fitz responded somewhere in there that Greg Little was having the best camp of all by far.
-- FYI…Jaylen Samuels is listed as an RB on the Steelers first camp depth chart.
-- Carolina has now lost ace blocker Darryl Williams for half of 2018, at least. Quasi-starter OL Amini Silatolu had surgery to repair a torn meniscus Friday. I have been advocating the OL injuries + Norv Turner are going to weigh heavily on the run game. However, McCaffrey with 25+ touches a game has to be a PPR RB1, maybe THEE #1 RB in PPR…even if he goes for 3.5 yards per carry.
Cam steals short running TDs is what keeps him back in our projections.
-- A mild hubbub from Aaron Rodgers… First, taking the young WRs to task and then heaping praise on Bengals cast-off WR Jake Kumerow.
Don’t hold ‘Bengals cast-off’ against Kumerow…the Bengals are notoriously bad at personnel decisions and proper usage (see Rex Burkhead, Mohammed Sanu, Joe Mixon’s 2017…and forcing Jeremy Hill upon us).
-- Pro Football Focus has listed Mitchell Trubisky as the 7th worst starting QB in the league for 2018. PFF is doing me more and more fantasy favors every month/year.
I look forward to their in-depth analysis and analytics explain how great Trubisky is…AFTER he’s great.
See: Jared Goff 2017
-- I heard Maurice Jones-Drew and Steve Mariucci lamenting how the young players don’t know how to huddle because of the silly pictures on the sidelines calling the plays. As if it was some fatal flaw. And it got me to thinking how absolutely and utterly ridiculous that sentiment is…and yet we all just ‘buy it’ because old football people say it.
What’s harder? Being in a huddle and someone calling the play or looking over to the sidelines and remembering what all the codes mean for the same exact play? At minimum, what’s the big difference? Like, who’s in the huddle going…”I don’t know what you mean with your words Mr. QB. Can you draw me a picture?”
If someone tells me, audibly “Hello,” and then someone else waves ‘hello’ to me instead of saying it…I’m not thrown into convulsions because I don’t know what non-verbal cues are, or I only understand visuals not spoken words. It’s the dumbest thing. These guys are in meeting rooms 25 hours a day everyday…they don’t know how to process a human speaking words that mean ‘a play’ in a semi-circle?
It’s akin to people who get the daily newspaper being uppity about those who get news off their cellphone. To each their own, but don’t think the joke is on me getting my news instantly in the palm of my hand.
My son and I were watching a TV show, I think it was the ‘Better Call Saul’ series opener this week. It’s a period piece from the like early 90s (I think), and one scene someone was throwing newspapers onto people’s driveways and my son was righteously confused and indignant. He’s like…”They just threw a paper onto your driveway once a day for your news?” I said, “No, they also did it in the afternoon as well.” He couldn’t believe it happened twice in a day.
We has this conversation while he was checking his Instagram and texting someone from Sweeden about a business opportunity on YouTube he was working on. I should have told my son to have the guy fax him over a proposal to make Steve Mariucci happy.
Where was I? Oh, enjoy the preseason games tonight. Three game recaps planned for tomorrow…that you won’t have to wait for the afternoon or morning paper to see…
-- Coming up on FFM and CFM…
Next draft guide update Friday…after we get the first wave of preseason to overact to tonight.
My ‘what to watch for and how to bet it’ for tonight’s games will be out midafternoon ET.
2019 NFL Draft prospect preview wraps up soon with a look at the defensive tackles.
Very Deep Sleepers Tyler Boyd posted this morning on FFM.
My Saturday night special I’ve been hinting at for draft guide subscribers…I tested this ‘thing’ again yesterday, and so far so good. Another test coming today and then I’ll announce this thing (or the failure of it) Friday or Saturday morning – having to do with the Saturday night NFL Network game.
Enjoy glorious (preseason) football tonight!!
