2018 Handicapping Chat: Week 1 -- Jets at Lions (-7.0)

RC: This game was -6.5 for a while and suddenly kicked up to -7.0. I thought everyone in the world was sold that Sam Darnold is a magician? What's driving this line higher? Three of us took the Jets...so some of you have to be loving this line move, no? Savage went 10-2-1 yesterday, so everyone just listen to him...

Katz: I think the Jets are a scrappy bunch. They have more talent than is typically associated with "Jets." Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, and Terrelle Pryor are a nice little trio. I wish I had Enunwa on more teams, but I dropped him at RC's behest for Jaylen "no snaps" Samuels. I kid. But not really. This obviously undoes all the things RC has gotten correct over the years. Point being, the Jets actually have some talent. The question is whether Sam Darnold can harness it. I don't think he's nearly as bad as RC thinks. Sure, the Lions could come out and stomp the Jets, but I like the Jets to keep it close.

Rabbitt: I don't trust the Lions as a franchise at all. This is a call on the Lions not being that good more so than the Jets being really good. I do love the line moving my way. I am strongly considering betting both games tonight as I cashed pretty good with heavy bets on the bears and bengals this week.

Skol:   I love taking points and don’t like Matt Patricia at all...but I attended Jets Training Camp and saw Darnold throw the ball live...so Lions it is.

Savage: This spread seems about right, I'm just taking the points with two teams I'm not real high on.

One thing that may help the Jets a bit: I don't think Matt Patricia is going to want to get torched by a rookie in his 1st game as a head coach. I expect him to play it safe defensively and lean on Stafford to get him his 1st win. That defensive philosophy probably helps Sam Darnold and the dink and dunk routine he was doing all preseason. If I'm right about that, the Jets should be able to move the ball a bit, probably kick a lot of field goals, and maybe have a chance to steal a win if they get a few breaks.

RC: The 'Rookie Coach Debut in Week 1' betting fear I have...

Reich/IND loss, no cover

Shurmur/NYG loss, no cover

Vrabel/TEN loss/no cover

Wilks/ARI loss, no cover

Gruden/OAK = ?

Patricia/DET = ?
