2019 ‘Best’ NFL Free Agent Period Tournament (AFC East)

Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.

We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’.

***Patriots v. Jets***

New England

Key adds: WR Bruce Ellington, TE Matt LaCosse, DE Mike Pennel, SAF Terrence Brooks, WR Maurice Harris, RB Brandon Bolden, WR Damoun Patterson, DE Michael Bennett,

Key losses:  DT Malcom Brown, DE Trey Flowers, WR Cordarrelle Patterson, SAF Eric Rowe, OT LaAdrian Waddle, OT Trent Brown

NY Jets

Key adds: QB Trevor Siemian, OC Tom Compton, TE Daniel Brown, CB Brian Poole, PK Chandler Catanzaro, RB Le’Veon Bell, LB C.J. Mosley, WR Jamison Crowder, OG Kelechi Osemele, Pick #196

Key losses: Pick #141, DE Mike Pennel, SAF Terrence Brooks, OC Spencer Long, OG James Carpenter, PK Jason Myers, WR Andre Roberts, CB Buster Skriner, TE Clive Walford

Analysis: I know the Patriots will make it work…not a doubt in my mind about it, but just looking at the names – obviously there is a lot more talent gone than what’s coming in. By a mile.

The Jets get better mostly by adding Le’Veon Bell….and the fact they didn’t have much to lose to begin with (because they didn’t have much talent). The odd thing is the other AFC East teams picked off a lot of their lower tier usage players – which is probably a sign of the Jets bungling talent, as you would expect.

Winner: More talent in than they lost, so the Jets are an easy winner here -- as the Patriots took several hits, but they’ll be just fine as we all know.

***Bills v. Dolphins***

Buffalo

Key adds: WR Andre Roberts, OT Ty Nsekhe, WR John Brown, WR Cole Beasley, RB Frank Gore, OC Mitch Norse, CB Kevin Johnson, TE Tyler Kroft, OC Spencer Long, OT LaAdrian Waddle

Key losses: OG John Miller

Miami

Key adds: QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, SAF Eric Rowe, TE Clive Walford, TE Dwayne Allen, LB James Burgess

Key losses: WR Danny Amendola, RB Brandon Bolden, RB Frank Gore, OT Ju’Wuan James, DE Cameron Wake

Analysis: Buffalo’s offseason…smart add of Mitch Morse and then a bunch of moves that makes no sense. They got better, overall, but mostly because that’s the only thing that could happen as low as they are on individual talent.

Somehow the Dolphins made moves that made less sense than what the Bills did. I hope Eric Rowe finds life in Miami, but I’m not holding my breath.

Winner: In the battle of teams going nowhere making moves that are head scratching, mostly, we give the ‘win’ to Buffalo.

FINALS

***Bills v. Jets***

Buffalo

Key adds: WR Andre Roberts, OT Ty Nsekhe, WR John Brown, WR Cole Beasley, RB Frank Gore, OC Mitch Norse, CB Kevin Johnson, TE Tyler Kroft, OC Spencer Long, OT LaAdrian Waddle

Key losses: OG John Miller

NY Jets

Key adds: QB Trevor Siemian, OC Tom Compton, TE Daniel Brown, CB Brian Poole, PK Chandler Catanzaro, RB Le’Veon Bell, LB C.J. Mosley, WR Jamison Crowder, OG Kelechi Osemele, Pick #196

Key losses: Pick #141, DE Mike Pennel, SAF Terrence Brooks, OC Spencer Long, OG James Carpenter, PK Jason Myers, WR Andre Roberts, CB Buster Skrine, TE Clive Walford

Analysis: I look at the Bills’ list of moves and see one player that makes a difference – Mitch Morse. I look at the Jets and see Le’Veon, C.J. Mosley, and possibly Osemele and Crowder pays off. More good guys go to the Jets, but NYJ lost a good kicker and a good O-Lineman in the mix.

Winner: Has to be the Jets. The ‘name’ appeal is there and the +/- are there. NYJ is getting better…in theory.
