Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.
We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’. We’re into the Final 8 division winners…
AFC Final Four…
***Jags v. Jets***
Key adds: LB Jake Ryan, WR Chris Conley, OT Cedric Ogbuehi, QB Nick Foles
Key losses: SAF Tashaun Gipson, RB Carlos Hyde, DT Malik Jackson, WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Key adds: QB Trevor Siemian, OC Tom Compton, TE Daniel Brown, CB Brian Poole, PK Chandler Catanzaro, RB Le’Veon Bell, LB C.J. Mosley, WR Jamison Crowder, OG Kelechi Osemele, Pick #196
Key losses: Pick #141, DE Mike Pennel, SAF Terrence Brooks, OC Spencer Long, OG James Carpenter, PK Jason Myers, WR Andre Roberts, CB Buster Skrine, TE Clive Walford
Analysis: The Jets got here on the strength of Le’Veon Bell, and the Jags arrived via their headline signing of Nick Foles. Just looking at the headlines, the Jags win this 1st-quarter of the offseason…you can somewhat tell how important Foles is because he got a much better deal/contract – because he IS more important.
If I ignored the headliners, I really like what the Jags added otherwise – Jake Ryan and Chris Conley are low key great additions. I might rather have healthy Jake Ryan, new Jags add LB, than new Jet C.J. Mosley, at their cost factors, but Mosley is quality too. I want to like the Kelechi Osemele signing by NYJ, but he may be shot.
The Jags lost nothing super-critical. The Jets lost a good kicker and OG Carpenter.
Winner: Since quarterback is everything, landing Foles is almost assuring the Jags winning the whole thing…but I also thought that about Kirk Cousins/MIN last year, but Houston won the tourney on the overall strength of their quality of adds vs. losses. The Jets got better, overall, with their moves but not enough where I’d put them past Jacksonville’s offseason to-date. Jags move on to the AFC Finals.
Key adds: WR Odell Beckham, RB Kareem Hunt, LB Olivier Vernon, TE Demetrius Harris, LB Adarius Taylor, DT Sheldon Richardson
Key losses: WR Breshad Perriman. QB Tyrod Taylor, OG Earl Watford, #17 pick, #95 pick, LB Jabrill Peppers, OG Kevin Zeitler
Key adds: WR Antonio Brown, LB Vontaze Burfict, WR J.J. Nelson, WR Tyrell Williams, SAF LaMarcus Joyner, LT Trenton Brown
Key losses: #66, #141 picks in the draft, TE Jared Cook
Analysis: The battle of teams that traded for elite WRs…what a strange offseason. Imagine two years ago, at this time, I told you Antonio and Odell would be traded to Oakland and Cleveland? You would think I was nuts.
I’d rather have OBJ than Antonio, but both are great…and the Browns paid way more for their move (in draft picks). The Browns also nabbed Kareem Hunt, but that was not a need just an opportunity. The Raiders adding Tyrell Williams and Trenton Brown is some serious firepower, potentially.
Winner: I thought this would be a Cleveland win because I like OBJ more than Antonio, but in reality…they are both close/both great. If you cancel them out and look at the other things – Oakland didn’t give up the key picks Cleveland did, and then the Raiders’ adds are much better than the Browns’ ones up and down the line. The Raiders moving on!
