2019 ‘Best’ NFL Free Agent Period Tournament (AFC North)

Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.

We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’.

***Ravens v. Bengals***

Baltimore

Key adds: SAF Earl Thomas, RB Mark Ingram

Key losses: WR John Brown, LB C.J. Mosley, LB Za’Darius Smith, LB Terrell Suggs, SAF Eric Weddle

Cincinnati

Key adds: DB B.W. Webb, OG John Miller

Key losses: TE Tyler Kroft, LB Vontaze Burfict

Analysis: The Ravens exchanged veteran safeties and added a running back who is as average/solid as any RB in the NFL…not a difference maker. Outside of that they lost three valuable linebackers. They have some talent in the wings to replace them, but it’s still a hit year-over-year.

The Bengals…I guess felt good about their roster? The most dull players to be on a list in the history of doing this, perhaps, and Burfict just added to the list.

Winner: Well, the Ravens went backwards and the Bengals, well, maybe didn’t get worse? Winner by default…Cincy. Yikes.

***Steelers v. Browns***

Pittsburgh

Key adds: LB Mark Barron, WR Donte Moncrief, CB Steven Nelson, Picks #66 and #141

Key losses: RB Le’Veon Bell, WR Antonio Brown, LB L.J. Fort, TE Jesse James

Cleveland

Key adds: WR Odell Beckham, RB Kareem Hunt, LB Olivier Vernon, TE Demetrius Harris, LB Adarius Taylor, DT Sheldon Richardson

Key losses: WR Breshad Perriman. QB Tyrod Taylor, OG Earl Watford, #17 pick, #95 pick, LB Jabrill Peppers, OG Kevin Zeitler

Analysis: The Steelers take a big hit at WR. They took a hit they could afford to at RB, but a hit nonetheless. They get a couple draft picks they’ll probably waste. Steven Nelson was a good get. Mark Barron is wildly overrated. The Steelers definitely didn’t get better this offseason. They may be fine overall, but just looking at their in-out list…they’ve not improved personnel overall.

The Browns are stealing all the headlines… They land OBJ. Grab Kareem Hunt. Add quality in Olivier Vernon. Get erratic Sheldon Richardson. They lose two nice draft picks for all that, essentially. Perriman wasn’t key, neither was Peppers. Zeitler was something but not a crushing blow.

Winner: You have to say the Browns are better now, but it’s not as simple as you think. When we see the names of the actual draft picks they dealt…it may be more of an overall wash. OBJ feels huge because of his popularity, but to actual operations…we’ll see. OBJ is such a force when he’s right…you have to like, if not love, this offseason for the Browns. Cleveland gets better and the Steelers lost a lot of talent.

***Browns vs. Bengals***

Cleveland

Key adds: WR Odell Beckham, RB Kareem Hunt, LB Olivier Vernon, TE Demetrius Harris, LB Adarius Taylor, DT Sheldon Richardson

Key losses: WR Breshad Perriman. QB Tyrod Taylor, OG Earl Watford, #17 pick, #95 pick, LB Jabrill Peppers, OG Kevin Zeitler

Cincinnati

Key adds: DB B.W. Webb, OG John Miller

Key losses: TE Tyler Kroft

Analysis: When you just stare at the list of names in and out…one team is trying and attracting talent. One is becoming a national joke again.

Winner: Browns move on easily over the ‘Bungles’. Man, the Browns are making waves at the same time all the other teams in the division are stepping on a rake. If the Browns don’t rule this division for years to come something went horribly wrong. One part the Browns moving up, three parts the rest of the division crumbling downward.
