2019 ‘Best’ NFL Free Agent Period Tournament (AFC South)

2019 ‘Best’ NFL Free Agent Period Tournament (AFC South)

Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.

We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’.

***Texans vs. Jags***

Houston

Key adds: CB Bradley Roby, SAF Tashaun Gipson, QB A.J. McCarron, TE Darren Fells

Key losses: CB Kareem Jackson, SAF Tyrann Mathieu, DT Christian Covington

Jacksonville

Key adds: LB Jake Ryan, WR Chris Conley, OT Cedric Ogbuehi, QB Nick Foles,

Key losses: SAF Tashaun Gipson, RB Carlos Hyde, DT Malik Jackson, WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Analysis: It kinda looks like Houston replaced every key player lost with a similar one…at-best. No real rise or fall with their moves.

On the other hand, I LOVE what the Jags have done this offseason. First, you know I’m probably going to push them to the title because of Nick Foles. You know me too well (I’m looking in the mirror typing this). To be fair, QB is the most critical position times five in the NFL and the Jaguars just solved a decade+ long problem in one move. But they also added a really good linebacker in Jake Ryan and a legit solid WR in Chris Conley (who Foles had some time with in KC).

Winner: Last year, Minnesota made it to the final two in our free agent tournament on the strength of their Kirk Cousins signing…but they lost to the Texans, our 2018 free agent period champion. Well, the QB signing rules the day here too and the free agent period defending champs, the Texans, get knocked out in the first round.

***Colts vs. Titans***

Indianapolis

Key adds: WR Devin Funchess

Key losses: none

Tennessee

Key adds: QB Ryan Tannehill, OG Rodger Saffold, DE Cameron Wake, WR Adam Humphries

Key losses: none

Analysis: What is Indy doing? A feels-like top 10 NFL team on the rise with a ton of cap space…and they have only added Devin Funchess? I know, I know…they don't want to mess with the locker room they've built -- that ’culture change’ nonsense. They can’t not spend some of their money…the NFL won’t allow it. They might have something big planned, but it hasn’t shown itself yet. Maybe Chris Ballard has the master plan and it hasn't revealed yet for 2019. I can only judge what they've +/-'d so far.

Wow, I didn’t realize what a nice offseason Tennessee was having. Tannehill is not great, but you need a real 2nd QB in the NFL (which 28+ teams haven’t figured out yet), especially when injury-prone Mariota is your #1. But adding Rodger Saffold is HUGE. Adam Humphries is expensive, but solid/nice.

Winner: Tennessee, no doubt…but, man, the Jags and Titans may have had two of the top five offseason in the NFL, but one has to go in the next matchup for the AFC South winner….

***Jags vs. Titans***

Jacksonville

Key adds: LB Jake Ryan, WR Chris Conley, OT Cedric Ogbuehi, QB Nick Foles,

Key losses: SAF Tashaun Gipson, RB Carlos Hyde, DT Malik Jackson, WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins

Tennessee

Key adds: QB Ryan Tannehill, OG Rodger Saffold, DE Cameron Wake, WR Adam Humphries

Key losses: none

Analysis: You’d rather have Foles than Tannehill, a win there. But adding Saffold is monumental in their efforts to fix their O-Line. Does Saffold out-rank Foles as a key signing?

Winner: Nope. Nick Foles means more than Saffold. Jags to the Final Eight, and I don’t know who can stop them.
