**This is the last installment of this series. Tomorrow we begin daily observation football notes on FFM (free style, whatever catches my eye) and on CFM we're going to start our slow draft/Dynasty Rookie Mock Draft series...a pick a day all throughout April up to the NFL Draft.
Coming up, when the schedules are announced, we'll be breaking those down for over/under win totals, etc.
Super Bowl of the Offseason/Free Agency period (1Q) 2019…
Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.
We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’. This is it – the final two…
***49ers v. Jaguars***
Key adds: LB David Mayo, WR Jordan Matthews, CB Jason Verrett, RB Tevin Coleman, LB Dee Ford, LB Kwon Alexander
Key losses: WR Pierre Garcon
Key adds: LB Jake Ryan, WR Chris Conley, OT Cedric Ogbuehi, QB Nick Foles
Key losses: SAF Tashaun Gipson, RB Carlos Hyde, DT Malik Jackson, WR Donte Moncrief, TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins
Analysis: Well, once again this comes down to how powerful is getting a franchise quarterback? If you look at the Jags offseason as some +/- moves everywhere else that kinda cancel and just look at Nick Foles as THE offseason, you’re pitting Foles against all the 49ers moves.
As I’ve said every round with SF – they got three instant starters (Ford, Alexander, Coleman) and two possible starters (Matthews, Verrett). Not just ‘starters’/useful but like impact type players. Matthews is such a great add to lead the young WR corps, even just as a mentor. Verrett could be the best player SF got, if he’s healthy.
Would I rather have Foles or the 3-5 starters the 49ers added?
Winner: I thought, before I started thinking about this, just in the set-up phase…that SF would have to win, but now I’m not so sure.
Tevin Coleman is good, but he’s not a must have for any team. RBs are low value. Jason Verrett is off two major injuries in two years and may not matter at all. I could see SF’s offseason just coming down to Dee Ford and Kwon Alexander as impactful…but would I trade Foles for Ford-Alexander? Hell no.
Not saying that because I love Foles. I really thought I’d pick SF here. However, when faced with the 49ers’ five vs. Foles…it’s like a crazy fantasy trade to get you to give up your Mahomes or Barkley or Hopkins – if someone tries to dazzle me with quantity, I appreciate the offer but I keep my quality item and not take a bunch of/a quantity of good and prospective players who I could find similar of most of them in the draft or free agency still. You can’t replace Foles – he fixes everything for Jacksonville. The 49ers group can integrate well and have some impact – but Foles can take a team to the Super Bowl, obviously. Not just be a part of a ‘winner’…but put on his back and take them, as he already has once…and then almost again last season.
For that reason, I have to say the Jags win it all just on the power of Foles…the guy who couldn’t find a starting job three years ago, but Josh McCown could, because the NFL knows more about talent than any of us!!!
