Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.
We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’. We’re into the Final 8 division winners…
NFC Final Four…
***Giants v. 49ers***
Key adds: WR Golden Tate, DT Olsen Pierre, DE Markus Golden, OG Kevin Zeitler, SAF Jabrill Peppers, FS Antoine Bethea, #17 and #95 draft pick
Key losses: WR Odell Beckham, DE Olivier Vernon, SAF Landon Collins, DB B.W. Webb
Key adds: LB David Mayo, WR Jordan Matthews, CB Jason Verrett, RB Tevin Coleman, LB Dee Ford, LB Kwon Alexander
Key losses: WR Pierre Garcon
Analysis: I like what NYG has done this offseason. They lost big names, but they got solid value players signed and two great draft picks in a very deep draft.
The 49ers had a fantastic 1Q of the 2019 offseason – and the more I consider it, the more I love it. Three high-end starters, possibly five high-end starters.
Winner: I get what NYG is trying to do, but it’s a lot of pluses and minuses that could make sense but is not a runaway/obvious ‘win’. On the other hand, the 49ers may have locked down a jump to a playoff spot…possibly a semi-shock NFC West title in 2019 with their moves, especially if Jason Verrett can return with something left in the tank. The 49ers move on to the NFC Finals.
Key adds: OC Matt Paradis, DE Bruce Irvin
Key losses: LB Thomas Davis, WR Devin Funchess, LB David Mayo
Key adds: OG Billy Turner, OLB Preston Smith, SAF Adrian Amos, OLB Za’Darius Smith
Key losses: CB Breshaud Breeland, WR Randall Cobb, OLB Clay Matthews, LB Jake Ryan
Analysis: Not much to talk about here. Carolina made it this far because every team in the NFC South was worse than them with +/-. Carolina is better with Matt Paradis, if he’s healthy.
The Packers very much got better. Three for sure defensive starters, guys we felt were all ‘sleeper best’ or the best at their position in free agency. They lost little from 2018…Jake Ryan was hurt, as was Cobb for the most part.
Winner: Definitely Green Bay…a very savvy offseason but now they face a team who had a great offseason as well – the 49ers.
Green Bay v. San Francisco will be published in the NFL Final Four in two days.
