2019 ‘Best’ NFL Free Agent Period Tournament (NFC West)

Looking strictly at the offseason moves through mid-March…the signings, lost players, trades, etc. Pitting two teams against each other and trying to evaluate which team got better through all their moves.

We’re going to go division-by-division, head-to-head tournament style, to get eight winners and then pit those finalists against each other until we get to the top AFC and NFC representatives and declare a ‘best of 2019’.

***Rams v. Cardinals***

LA Rams

Key adds: LB Clay Matthews, SAF Eric Weddle, QB Blake Bortles

Key losses: LB Mark Barron, CB LaMarcus Joyner, OT Rodger Saffold

Arizona

Key adds: DT Darius Philon, SAF Josh Shaw, WR Kevin White, OG Max Garcia, PK Cole Murphy, QB Brett Hundley, LB Jordan Hicks, OG J.R. Sweezy, OLB Terrell Suggs, OT Marcus Gilbert, TE Charles Clay, DE Brooks Reed, CB Robert Alford, RB Brandon Wilds

Key losses: 6th-round pick, SAF Antoine Bethea, OT Oday Aboushi, OG Mike Iupati, LB Deone Bucannon, WR J.J. Nelson

Analysis: It’s a huge blow for the Rams to lose a veteran OL like Saffold. They have bodies to replace him but losing Saffold does not make your team better. Adding Blake Bortles shows me the Rams really cannot be trusted outside of McVay’s play calling and Jared Goff’s talent.

Arizona had so many changes I didn’t realize I was going to type a book on just noting them all. What I like about this Arizona offseason – they haven’t wildly overspent, they’ve just picked off opportunity and taken some cheap looks at players who have shown talent. Jordan Hicks was a great signing (if he stays healthy) to defend passes in the high-flying NFC West and Brett Hundley is so smart to be a same-style backup with Kyler (likely) coming in.

Winner: Arizona…I love this preseason so much I’m ready to stop making fun of Steve Keim and wondering if Kliff Kingsbury has a real shot to surprise now. I’ll hold off until I see what they do with that #1 pick. However, definitely a winner here.

***Seahawks v. 49ers***

Seattle

Key adds: OG Mike Iupati, PK Jason Myers, QB Paxton Lynch

Key losses: CB Justin Coleman, RB Mike Davis, QB Brett Hundley, DT Shamar Stephen, OG JR Sweezy, SAF Earl Thomas

San Francisco

Key adds: LB David Mayo, WR Jordan Matthews, CB Jason Verrett, RB Tevin Coleman, LB Dee Ford, LB Kwon Alexander

Key losses: WR Pierre Garcon

Analysis: Signing Jason Myers was low-key smart, and Mike Iupati could be very good if he has any juice left. However, Seattle lost a ton of depth/useful players in the transition. I think Seattle lost more than they gained, just from this group.

The 49ers are big winners, in part because they had no one to lose…just Garcon. Dee Ford alone is a huge get but adding Kwon Alexander is really nice and if Jason Verrett has anything left – this is a great offseason.

Winner: 49ers without a doubt. Seattle may be OK, but SF is definitely way better.

FINALS

***Cardinals vs. 49ers***

Arizona

Key adds: DT Darius Philon, SAF Josh Shaw, WR Kevin White, OG Max Garcia, PK Cole Murphy, QB Brett Hundley, LB Jordan Hicks, OG J.R. Sweezy, OLB Terrell Suggs, OT Marcus Gilbert, TE Charles Clay, DE Brooks Reed, CB Robert Alford, RB Brandon Wilds

Key losses: 6th-round pick, SAF Antoine Bethea, OT Oday Aboushi, OG Mike Iupati, LB Deone Bucannon, WR J.J. Nelson

San Francisco

Key adds: LB David Mayo, WR Jordan Matthews, CB Jason Verrett, RB Tevin Coleman, LB Dee Ford, LB Kwon Alexander

Key losses: WR Pierre Garcon

Analysis: I love what Arizona is doing, but it is a lot of quantity that may not be much quality…or, at least, not as much as the 49ers brought in.

Most intriguing offseason so far…for me…might be Arizona. But…

Winner: BUT the better ‘on paper’ offseason than Arizona so far – the 49ers’ moves. Three key starters brought in, and it may be as many five high-level starters coming in.
