2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Football Training Camp Notes (8/04/2019)

Throughout the preseason, we’ll be dropping Dynasty-Fantasy notes every few days as we have some things of interest, rumors, etc., to talk about.

*Writing them on the fly, forgive any errors (in no particular order)…

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES Camp Notes…

-- Miles Sanders is not smooth/fluid catching the ball out of the backfield…it’s been a camp disappointment for sure. It’s another reason why Darren Sproles was inked – Jordan Howard and Miles Sanders are weaker pass catchers.

This is a bit of a disappointment cloud over Sanders in camp…just a bit. There’s a ‘he’s a rookie’ excuse, and that may be legit…but it hasn’t been the ‘wow’ people hoped.

Please don’t gimme: ‘but the team says they love him’ (because you saw a Roto-headline). The teams all love every rookie…they’re all going to the Hall of Fame. The Roto-notes are just a cherry-picked collection of local media reports that are coming from beat writers and fan sites whose business it is to wear rose colored glasses and pass Kool Aid to the other cult members.

Here comes the social media hits that I don’t know what I’m talking about. Good thing, I rarely/ever look at it. I didn’t say Sanders is a bust…I’m mentioning what the paid carnival barkers won’t…what I’m being told from the inside – and is what I scouted/saw back pre-Draft with his work at Penn State.

-- Josh Adams and Boston Scott have been providing some ‘wow’ moments in camp of late. Adams is making a push for the #4 RB spot…because the Eagles know if they cut him, he’ll never clear waivers back to them.

 -- Three IDP standouts…

2nd-year LB Josh Sweat is the noted ‘talk of camp’ on the defensive side. The athletic OLB has garnered much attention for his play.

2nd-year LB/DL Joe Ostman is just making plays…as he did in his college career. He just is always in on the action. He’s likely to make the team as a utility LB/DL option…a backup.

3rd-year DB Rasul Douglas was terrific for IDP late last season…and he appears to be on track to start Week 1. Douglas-Jones-Maddox as the three CBs.

ARIZONA CARDINALS Camp Notes…

-- The 53-man roster release has people talking…

WR Kevin White is listed as a starter. Andy Isabella tracking a 2nd-team/#4 WR it looks like…and Arizona goes 4-wide a lot. Hakeem Butler in the distance with the 3rd-team. KeeSean Johnson a 2nd-team listed WR but might the #4 WR as well.

I think the rookies are going to change ‘ranking’ quickly, upward, with actual preseason games. I’m not believing White is going to start Week 1, right now. Let me see what he does in the preseason. Isabella v. KeeSean is the race for the starting #3, I believe.

-- Ricky Seals-Jones is tracking as the #3 TE behind Charles Clay and Maxx Williams. RSJ is a bit of a knucklehead and vastly overrated. He may not even make this 53-man roster.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Camp Notes…

-- Tape I saw Saturday…it was Goodwin-Bourne working a lot as starters in two-WR sets.

 -- 2nd-team work was Hurd-Samuel-Trent Taylor.

Note that during their Saturday practice, I saw…George Kittle on a TE jet sweep a la the type of Robert Woods jet sweep plays/runs. Jalen Hurd took an end-around pitch coming in motion from spread out flanker to Cordarrelle Patterson-looking WR run play. Hurd’s carries/touch count, despite being a backup, could be a big surprise in fantasy production/efficiency this year. He can be used so many ways.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS Camp Notes…

-- You might have seen the ‘Andy Reid frustration with Damien Williams’ comments in the Roto-blurbs. I watched that press Q&A with Reid before that note even appeared. I didn’t take his responses that way at all. Reid was being peppered with camp questions and he adeptly gave a bunch of non-answers and ‘everything and everybody is great’ dismissals.

The Roto-news acted like Williams being out led to some new revelation on Carlos Hyde. Williams has started 7 games in his career, Hyde 43. How is Reid not aware of who Hyde is and what he’s capable of? Despite the history, Reid already claimed Williams as his no doubt starter weeks ago…he didn’t open up the backfield to competition…which furthers the notion ‘best man earns the job’ is total coach speak B.S. This is Williams’ job per Andy Reid, which means only reality (actual games) can stop it now…not who looks good in training camp.

As an add-on, Carlos Hyde was at the media tent right around the same time taking questions – all his words were that of a backup. He’s ‘here to help the team in anyway’ or ‘when my number is called I need to be ready’, etc.

-- Of the vaunted UDFA WRs that the Chiefs brought in this year it’s Cody Thompson making the best impression. Jamal Custis has faded in ‘buzz’ and I’m not sure I’ve seen Felton Davis on the field.

-- I have three KC sources who are telling me three different things on who is starting at the other two linebacker positions along with Anthony Hitchens:

1) Thinks it’s the ‘names’ – Reggie Ragland and Darron Lee.

2) Thinks it is Dorian O’Daniel and Lee.

3) Thinks it is Damien Wilson as the sudden dark horse starter with Ragland/Lee. Andy Reid loves Anthony Hitchens, and Hitchens loves Damien Wilson from their days back in Dallas. Reid had very nice things to say about Wilson in his media Q&A.
