2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Football Training Camp Notes (8/05/2019)

Throughout the preseason, we’ll be dropping Dynasty-Fantasy notes every few days as we have some things of interest, rumors, etc., to talk about.

*Writing them on the fly, forgive any errors (in no particular order)…

MINNESOTA VIKINGS Training Camp Notes…

-- You think rookie TE Irv Smith is a sleeper, the fantasy TE to be desired for fantasy from the Vikings? FYI, all Mike Zimmer is talking about, lately at tight end, is how great Tyler Conklin looks and he’s assuring the local reporters that Conklin is going to have a bigger role.

Conklin is a pretty good receiving TE prospect in his own right and is now ‘getting things’ about the pro game (blocking, etc.). I mention that not to proclaim Conklin an FF-sleeper…more that Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith were already watered down by each other’s presence for fantasy…now, here comes Conklin.

-- Rookie RB Alexander Mattison is the definite #2 RB for Minny. His ADP is starting to spike because of the mistrust of Dalvin Cook staying healthy, and all the signs pointing to Mattison as the clear #2.

-- Chad Beebe is going to be the #3 WR/slot guy for Minnesota. The Laquon Treadwell as the token starting #3 WR is likely over.

-- Kyle Sloter has been getting bad reviews for his training camp performance, but then he did what he always does – lit it up in the intra-squad scrimmage game for the fans the other night.

-- DT Jaleel Johnson, whom I’ve always liked since my first scouting studies of him out of Iowa…he and 2nd-year, unique DL/NT/LB prospect Hercules Mata’afa (back from his season ending injury this time last year) have been working with the 1s on the D-Line some the past few days.

-- Vandy rookie UDFA RB prospect Khari Blasingame is doing work at fullback, I’m told. Kiss his rookie sleeper status good-bye. He should be a tailback…and in the mix for the #2 role, but he’s a UDFA that is a super smart young man – so football lunkheads don’t see him as a viable guy with the ball. Man, go watch his tape, Zim. Form the people that brought you ‘sticking with Laquon’ WAYYY too long and the best they can do Chad Beebe as a new #3…comes ‘not understanding Blasingame’ (or Sloter).

-- The three young RBs that I am seeing the most heat on from over the weekend…

The aforementioned Mattison.

Justin Jackson…Ekeler too, but the ‘sharps’ are chasing Jackson.

Darwin Thompson…the religious faith in him makes me laugh.

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS Training Camp Notes…

The first training camp depth chart was released, and we have some interesting items…

-- As I mentioned yesterday, I had a source who was assuring me Damien Wilson was moving into the coach’s heart as a starter, a lot because of Wilson’s relationship with Anthony Hitchens. Wilson was listed as a starter on the depth chart just released.

…which means Dorian O’Daniel is not making his way to the starting lineup, a guy I think is loaded with talent – he’s listed 3rd-team. I can remember how many years Andy Reid held back Daniel Sorensen.

I have the funniest feeling Andy Reid is going to butcher this 2019 season Super Bowl roster.

-- Jamal Custis as 2nd-team WR was pleasing to see. Byron Pringle as a 3rd-team guy was surprising to see because I’ve seen and heard more about Pringle’s camp than Custis’s (or Cody Thompson…also 2nd-team).

-- The Damien Williams-Carlos Hyde sudden roto-controversy? I have special commentary on that for subscriber's only later today.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS Training Camp Notes…

-- I saw Jordan Matthews working with the 1s a lot Sunday. Kendrick Bourne was working with the starters the day prior…but Matthews may have had the day off.

Based on pure observation of the 49ers’ drills it seems Goodwin-Matthews-Pettis are starting, and Hurd-Samuel-Taylor are the 2nd-team. With Taylor coming in as a specialty 1st-team option and Hurd running some special alignments too. Deebo Samuel is very quiet in all this.

ATLANTA FALCONS Training Camp Notes…

-- I am seeing rookie CB Kendall Sheffield getting more time working with the 1s the last few days.

-- RB Brian Hill is getting more work than rookie Qadree Ollison the last few camp video clips I’ve watched. Hill is making a case for the #3 RB, and possible #2 RB if Ito Smith falters…but I think Ito has the #2 job locked, today, but could give it away with a weak preseason/Hill pops more.

It’s not set in stone, but it’s pretty solid Ito is the #2 today…and Ollison is falling off the grid more and more.
