2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk1 Giants 31, NY Jets 22
I had this game lowest on priority of Week 1 to re-watch/study because it seemed to have the least interesting situations/rookies playing. Usually when I presume like that -- I’m burned by it…that there were really some hidden gems waiting to be seen.
Not this time.
I’m going to keep this short and sweet because I really have little/nothing here compared to normal.
Fantasy Player Notes…
-- Let’s talk QBs…
Rookie Daniel Jones (5-5 for 63 yards, 1 TD/0 INT) was the talk of the media after this game (because ‘New York’ things matter more than all the other teams/cities). Rightfully so, I guess, here. He was solid/looked good. Likely looked GREAT to those hoping for Jones to have a positive/not-negative showing.
Jones seemed very comfortable for a rookie debut and waltzed the team down the field and threw a pretty TD pass. He ‘looked’ the part…comfortable and nice-looking throws, but he had almost no pressure and made some simple/solid throws that were a nice ‘5-6’ on the 0-10 scale and the media cranked it up to a ‘13’ in reporting. (See too: Sam Darnold 2018).
Jones was solid/encouraging but I was not taken aback by his performance. The Jets’ backup CBs are CFL level…that didn’t hurt.
Jets backup, former Tennessee draft pick, Luke Falk (9-11 for 69 yards, 1 TD/0 INT), who is better at quarterbacking than anyone in this game, had a solid but safe/efficient showing…as he does. Falk doesn’t have the Manning Academy hype, or a laser beam arm, so he’ll never see an NFL field on purpose while Daniel Jones cashes million dollar checks.
Jets backup, former Giants 3rd-round pick, Davis Webb (2-7 for 11 yards, 0 TD/2 INT) was better than the terrible stat line but he had the worst outcome of the night and worked behind Falk…which means Webb is going to be cut soon, and probably claimed by Arizona for their practice squad…the former Texas Tech star with Kingsbury.
-- NYG off-the-street pickup WR T.J. Jones (6-72-1/6) had a game…it was needed for a Giants WR group decimated by injury. Jones isn’t a terrible WR prospect. Buried in Detroit for years, he has a nice speed-agility combo and had some nice games/stat lines at the end of the 2018 season when he got a chance.
I could see Jones making the team and starting Week 1. It doesn’t mean a whole lot for FF because he’s working with Eli in that case, but don’t be surprised if he’s pressed into starting duty while other guys miss time for a few weeks.
-- I was interested to see NYJ rookie LB Blake Cashman (4 tackles) play in his debut, and he looked fine. Was working middle linebacker a bunch, which I was hopeful of, but doesn’t seem to be threatening the starting lineup anytime soon.
-- Let’s end Week 1 of the preseason recaps with this note…
I was watching to see if TE Daniel Brown (0-0-0/1) was coming in 2nd-team, after Chris Herndon’s start. Would Brown be my Very Deep Sleeper fulfillment or not? I had to check.
Ryan Griffin (0-0-0/1) came in 2nd-team, to my heart’s serious dismay. I kept watching plays to see what Griffin was doing and when Brown might come in (he came in 3rd-team much later). So, for some reason, because of Brown, I watched a lot of Griffin. And let me just say…
…that was the worst few minutes of tight end tape/play that I may have ever seen. If the Jets start Ryan Griffin over Daniel Brown, they extra-deserve the curse of Dowell Loggains they’ve self-imposed. What the H? How is that guy even taken seriously? He was missing blocks (because he’s so slow). He lumbers out for passes and fell over twice because his feeble legs don’t work properly, it looked like. Sad. Sad the Jets are considering him their #2 TE right now…which means he’s in-line to be the Weeks 1-4 starter with Herndon out.
