2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk1 Green Bay 28, Houston 26

The battle of Joe Webb (playing the entire game for HOU) vs. DeShone Kizerwhat an epic battle! How can I scout anything in this game with these two at QB? Well, I did.

Here are the player notes…

-- D’Onta Foreman is gone and Duke Johnson has arrived (possibly the worst trade of the year, by Houston), so there is a void for a real running back behind perpetual disappointment Lamar Miller.

The clear winner of the RB backup race, in this game, was UDFA rookie Damarea Crockett (6-24-1). He won somewhat by default because rookie Karan Higdon (8-37-0) is awful and Josh Ferguson (2-2-1, 0-0-0/1) is not making this team…he entered the fray very late in the game.

The real winner for the real backup to Lamar Miller…a running back on another team that will be cut or traded around the 53-man cutdown. Samaje Perine or Josh Adams, please!!!

-- There are running back concerns on the other side of the field as well…

Aaron Jones is hurt (minor) again…as he often is, but Leonard Fournette gets dinged in fantasy for an injury history…but everyone is pretty fine with erratically available Jones and oft-injured Dalvin Cook.

With Jones and Jamaal Williams not playing here, rookie Dexter Williams (14-62-0, 1-18-0/1) got a longer look and was fine/OK/solid. Nothing special.

Ditto for a running back I like as useful, Tra Carson (8-15-0, 1-10-0/1). Williams will be one of the three rostered RB, and Carson might make it if Jones or Williams are hurt for Week 1.

No special fantasy uprisings that I see for Green Bay, just a cluster to figure out.

-- Jake Kumerow (2-27-0/2) and Marquez Valdes-Scantling ‘started’ for the Pack. Equanimeous St. Brown (0-0-0/1) rotated in soon after.

If you didn’t know better, and you just based everything on this one game watch…you’d swear Kumerow is the best of the group. He ran some nice, tough over-the-middle routes and made nice catches under duress like a real NFL WR.

St. Brown, a guy I like as a prospect with some Kenny Golladay traits…he’s falling off the map as a potential starter, or even as a #4 WR in the group.

Allen Lazard (1-27-1/3) had a majestic, leaping TD catch in the end zone on a 27-yard strike. That guy should be contending for a starting spot on an NFL team…but I’m not sure he’ll make the Packers’ 53-man. If he does make it, he’s buried behind Kumerow and ESB.

-- The one player who really stood out to me from this contest was Packers’ rookie ILB Ty Summers (10 tackles). He played just about the entire game and was really patrolling the middle like a classic ILB. Good instincts, quick feet, solid hitter.

Our CFM computer scouting models liked him but seeing him in the pro gamer makes me feel even better. Going to be moving him up the Dynasty Rookie Draft rankings more.

-- Speaking of linebackers, one of my faves, Texans LB Dylan Cole (4 tackles) was his usual great self…and he still won’t get a starting nod come Week 1. If he ever gets into that starting lineup…top 10 in the NFL in tackles for sure.

-- Packers TE (converted from WR) Robert Tonyan (1-23-0/1) continues to develop and makes me wonder why the Packers drafted Jace Sternberger so highly. Tonyan is buried behind Graham-Sternberger, but he’s a little Sternberger-like as a fairly quick footed TE/WR hybrid looking TE.

-- High profile #1 pick DE/OLB Rashan Gary played some snaps but showed his usual…nothing, statistically. A couple nice surges off the edge but ultimately not getting to the QB/ballcarrier.

If he’s labeled as an ‘LB’ instead of a ‘DL’ than he is junk in IDP. He’s a pass rusher prospect only.

-- A mostly meaningless note, but Packers backup QB Tim Boyle (3-5 for 40 yards, 2 TDs/0 INT) continues to look pretty decent to my eye (for the 2nd year in a row). The fact that the Packers will push DeShone Kizer and bury Boyle is why I cannot trust their decision making in personnel.

If Rashan Gary busts (likely) and the sad RB rotation of Jones-Williams-Dexter Williams flops, and if Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison underwhelm and St. Brown ends up a wasted pick – you have to start question that the Packers President/Overlord has no idea what he’s doing…even more so if Matt LaFleur and Aaron Rodgers do battle, which seems inevitable.
