2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk1 Titans 27, Eagles 10

This was a very lethargic performance by the Eagles, especially on offense…especially in the run game: 17 carries for 37 yards rushing combined for the team. The Titans ran all over Philly and were efficiently throwing all game as well.

Player notes…

-- All the Eagles’ RBs looked ‘unimpressive’, in a sense. It had to be the (backup) O-Line losing to the Titans’ D-Line, in part. Two things of notes from the RB group…

1) Josh Adams (3-3-0, 3-18-0/3) worked ahead of Wendell Smallwood. It was Howard-Sanders…then Adams…then Smallwood. Not a good sign for my hopes Adams is cut/traded to where he can emerge. It may be Smallwood on the move. Regardless, all are buried here except Jordan Howard (3-8-0).

2) Miles Sanders (3-3-0) really looked bland…a bit skittish even, but not enough touches to really take too many jabs at him. He did nothing to help his ADP/enthusiasm. I just saw an ESPN thing where Sanders was a few ‘experts’ top pick breakout star among all RBs – the experts love him, but the ‘we the people’ are not as interested. This showing did not help the Sanders cause.

I am seeing David Montgomery full surpassing Sanders in most Dynasty Rookie Drafts now. Sanders is drifting away, as he should.

-- The Tennessee RB group produced two notes for me…

1) Jeremy McNichols (8-44-0) is doing that thing again…the thing where he looks really good in the preseason. He’s listed 3rd-team on the depth chart. We’ll see if he it actually makes the team. He’s looked solid in camp and looked NFL-worthy here.

2) Rookie UDFA Alex Barnes (10-14-0, 1-3-0/1) didn’t have such a hot stat line. When I saw the line before watching the tape, I was feeling queasy. However, once I watched the tape – no worries. He entered the game late and the O-Line was corrupted, and Barnes could barely get a step going before there were defenders on him. What I saw from him…the movement skills were there. It’s all good.

…except he needs ‘moments’ if he’s going to make the team, and he definitely did not have any here. He’s 50-50 to make the squad right now.

-- Rookie WR J.J. Arcega-Whiteside (2-23-0/4) was the talk of the broadcast I watched. The Eagles announcers already have him as one of the immortals.

I’m intrigued to see how this works out, because I’m taking the ‘not as good as they say’ side of the trade. I see a guy with good hands, limited mobility/not-the-moves to get open quickly enough in the NFL. Nice high point catcher but is always covered so he’s in a scrum trying to make catches.

In this game, he had a couple solid catches against lesser cover guys but then was covered by Adoree Jackson (NFL starter) on a deep ball, and JJAW was blanketed all the way and kept away from the catch…which I see all the time with JJAW on tape.

He has the size and the hands…will that be enough to overcome the lack of burst/cutting ability? In the new NFL, maybe it is? We might be moving to the era of hands over 40-time. There are several test subjects to watch for this in 2019.

Diontae Johnson, KeeSean Johnson, Jakobi Meyers, Arcega-Whiteside vs. Marquise Brown, Mecole Hardman, D.K. Metcalf…to name a few.

-- On the other hand, Dallas Goedert (3-50-0/5) was making a mockery of coverage in this game. Goedert’s career is being wasted, unintentionally by being on the Eagles, behind Zach Ertz. It’s costing him money, fame, and Hall of Fame stat compilations. Likely, another year of FF heartache in 2019 as you’ll be left guessing the weeks that he has his big games alongside Ertz.

For Dynasty, we may have to wait 2+ more years. What a shame for the young man who is having his earning potential sequestered.

-- The best ‘thing’ I saw in this game? A brief glimpse of rookie ILB David Long (1 tackle). “Mr. TFL” in college, at West Virginia, a top LB in college football, but bad numbers at the NFL Combine undid his story/draft momentum.

He looked like the same great player here that I saw at Senior Bowl week – quick to the ball carrier and hitting perfectly. He just has a nose for this. Long may be like these slower Combine WRs, who are just great football players and breakthrough despite the lower end measurables. We’ll see. He’s on a team with two great young ILBs as it is (Rashaan Evans and Jayon Brown). It may be a bit before he matters for IDP.
