2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk2 Vikings 25, Seahawks 19
-- Another week, another game where Mike Boone (21-66-0, 1-45-0/1) he’s the most talented RB on the Vikings’ depth chart. But I’ve seen this movie before… Whatever I see, Mike Zimmer sees the opposite until he’s forced to see it my way (Jerick McKinnon missed opportunity, Latavius Murray missed opportunity, Adam Thielen before he was the Thielen we know today, Laquon Treadwell sucks, not knowing how to use Cordarrelle Patterson, etc.). Boone is working as the clear #3 RB for this team…and did in this game.
Rookie Alexander Mattison (10-41-0, 1-4-0/2) is Zimmer’s clear choice for the #2 RB…because Mattison has draft status and Zimmer loves underwhelming weapons as his first choice. Enjoy your new #3 WR, Chad Beebe, Vikings’ fans!! The 49ers literally have eight WRs on their current roster better than the Vikings starting #3 WR (Beebe).
Boone is putting pressure on the situation with every preseason game because he is so obviously talented…,and showing it with all his huge chunk plays this preseason. Anyone watching can see it, but Zimmer will be the last to know/see it…and it could cost Minnesota a game or two in a subtle way when Mattison gets pushed for relief touches and fails to pick up a 1st-down but Boone might have broken for a big gain/TD…things we’ll never know, but I know as a defensive coordinator I’d rather Zimmer come at me with predictable Cook-Mattison and keep Boone in the garage.
-- I’d push the Vikings as my (weak) NFC North champs this year, but I know Zimmer makes too many poor choices on offense that will cost him a game or two.
I will have a litmus test on Zimmer before the season starts to gage how much I buy the Vikes as NFC North champs this year…
1) Did Kyle Sloter (11-13 for 116 yards, 1 TD/0 INT) even make the team, and even better…is he above Sean Mannion? This is my #1 litmus test for Zimmer’s management of the team.
Once again, Sloter shined in a preseason game here. It gets laughed about now…even the game announcer (Charles Davis) was calling him the Preseason MVP for the last few years. But my question is – If all Sloter does is shine in games, and if that is apparently meaningless…then why is there even a preseason? What else are we looking for besides ‘guy is great on the field every time in the most unfavorable circumstances (working as a random 2nd and 3rd team QB with a porous backup-to-th-ebackups O-Line and CFL receivers)’?
The NFL looks at…’where did you go to school and/or what round were you drafted?’ as more important. Again, let’s just cancel the preseason and training camp then.
2) Did Mike Boone even make the team, and even better…is he above Mattison in the depth chart?
3) Why did the Vikings just trade for Kaare Vedvik last week and not have him kick any field goals in this game? He punted and kicked off, but not in on the one FG attempt. Dan Bailey is still the lead kicker. Is Mike Zimmer about to butcher his kicker situation for about the millionth time in a row? Just move on from Bailey already…and stop bullying your kickers and destroying their confidence/abilities.
-- Let’s just finish out the Vikings’ notes from this game…
Rookie TE Irv Smith (5-37-1/5) looked good in extended work here. Smith could be a nice weapon as a receiver and he’s the best blocker of the top rookie tight ends -- but the world needs more tugboat Kyle Rudolph in action, I guess.
Zimmer doesn’t trust rookies unless they are Dalvin Cook or defensive players.
-- Rashaad Penny (6 carries for -2 yards, 2-10-0/3) is dying a slow death, just like Pete Carroll hoped. Just when you think you have the NFL’s flow figured out, Seattle wastes a 1st-round pick on a running back and then does everything they can to push a 7th-round, slow but tough but non-explosive runner over the 1st-rounder.
Tampa Bay will keep draft darling Ronald Jones rostered out of embarrassment, but Penny is all but buried/ignored in Seattle.
It’s one of those things where no one cares anymore to start the season, and then in like Week 3, Carson is struggling and Penny comes in and blows the doors off and has a huge game and then Pete Carroll is like ‘Oh, yeah…I’ve always loved Rashaad. This was my plan all along!’
For right now, Penny is nearly not worth drafting in redrafts, but he will be ranked higher than he should be by your draft site because they built their rankings weeks ago based on thoughts from months ago and only some names get updated. If you’re auto drafting…you’ll probably get stuck with Penny…or Ronald Jones.
Rookie RB Travis Homer (4-16-0, 0-0-0/1) is not the answer either. He debuted here. He’s barely good enough to make the 53-man roster right now. If C.J. Prosise could not be injured ever, Homer might be headed to the practice squad.
-- Russell Wilson started for a few series, and we saw him and his #1 WR Tyler Lockett (3-27-0/4) connecting. It was a reminder how much Wilson is going to lean on Lockett.
-- In Seattle rookie WR news…
Jazz Ferguson (2-24-0/7) heat is cooling off. Some of it is he’s stuck with Paxton Lynch in these games.
John Ursua (1-25-0/2, 1-11-0) looks like he’s definitely making the main roster. He’s showing speed and receiver skills every game, despite the Paxton Lynch factor.
Greg Jennings (0-0-0/1), who I really think has nice receiver skills, is falling off the face of the earth in Seattle. Jennings has the skills, but his aggressiveness, his ‘it’ factor…he didn’t show it all that much at West Virginia, he was just quietly very good. In the pros, he’s really taken a backseat. He might play his way to the practice squad (or claimed by another team) considering Ursua and Ferguson will now make this team.
