2019 Dynasty-Fantasy Preseason Analysis Wk3 – Raiders 22, Packers 21
Every joke in the book was probably written about the 80-yard field the game was played on. I’m not going to go there. I was just watching it wondering – if the NFL isn’t taking this seriously, and these two teams are playing all backups, mostly, with the wrong-sized field…why should any of us take it seriously?
But…I love watching the backups/young players get a chance in the preseason -- so you know I’ve got some notes. I’m starting with my main one from the game and then the other seven…I put the numbers into a hat and pulled one out at a time and I’ll write them in that order…just to entertain myself in a very not-entertaining game.
Fantasy Player Notes…
-- Oakland kicker Daniel Carlson nailed all three of his FG attempts here. He is now 4-for-4 in the 2019 preseason -- and going back to his 2018 regular season with Oakland (16-of-17 FGs) …he’s now 20-of-21 in FG attempts as a Raider.
You might recall Carlson was a highly lauded and highly drafted (for a PK) kicker for Minnesota in 2018, that Mike Zimmer immediately undermined in the press when he missed a kick in the preseason. Players are killed if they talk about coaches in the press, but Zimmer can slice and dice anyone he wants in the media because he’s the king and the players are his dutiful subjects who just love him (because they have no choice).
Great job Zim!! Couldn’t be his fault on all their kicker failures. Nahhh. Never the coach’s fault!
-- Tra Carson (9-32-1, 1-2-0/2) might actually beat out rookie Dexter Williams (11-27-0, 1-5-0/1) for the #3 RB spot in Green Bay.
If so…if Aaron Jones gets hurt AGAIN…Carson is getting into position for his first real NFL action on purpose. I hope that, but that means it will never come true…
-- Oakland UDFA rookie WR Keelan Doss (4-51-0/6) has been a semi-big deal on ‘Hard Knocks’, and he’s potentially going to make the roster…maybe. UDFAs have such a barrier to get past.
He’s been solid in the preseason, but I haven’t seen any ‘wow’…he’s just a solid hand. He might be a starter some day with more experience. He’s not bad, but not a future star imminent.
-- For what it is worth, Raiders’ UDFA CB Keisean Nixon (2 tackles, 1 PD) played a heck of a game from what I saw. Very good in coverage and the Pack has/was playing legit talents with their backup WRs. Nixon may make this team and send Nick Nelson packing.
-- If Packers’ backup QB Tim Boyle (16-25 for 191 yards, 2 TDs/0 INT) does not make this team and is not the #2 QB to Aaron Rodgers, then I have no faith in the management of this team. No one could watch Boyle and DeShone Kizer (4-7 for 24 yards, 0 TD/1 INT) and go with Kizer.
-- Raiders 7th-round pick, converted WR-to-DE Quinton Bell (3 tackles) is not looking bad this preseason. I thought he’d be more lost and not playing with 2nd-team, but he is hanging in there and chasing ballcarriers and QBs nicely at this stage. He might make this team. He needs more development time thought…so it might be on the P-Squad.
-- The Packers backup WRs are better than starters Valdes-Scantling/Allison…
Gimme Jake Kumerow (2-20-1/4) and Allen Lazard (2-24-0/4) all day long. They both are having a nice preseason and that will likely force Green Bay to put Equanimeous St. Brown on season-long IR.
For his part, ESB has mailed it in/pouted (in my view) this preseason. He looks like disinterested Dante Pettis.
I’m getting to the point that I’m done with diva/too cool WRs from college into the pros. The mid-major or smaller school or generally overlooked WRs have been where it is at for a while now. Even more pronounced this draft.
-- The best for last, maybe…
Packers rookie ILB Ty Summers (10 tackles) has been getting a ton of work at ILB this preseason. Like he is always out there on every play it seems. Interested to see where he rates on the first depth chart for Week 1 for Green Bay.
